Editorial Reviews
CD Description
This self-titled album from the group that surprised even itself with the success of its premiere release, HINTS, ALLEGATIONS & THINGS LEFT UNSAID, represents Collective Soul's first complete manifestation as a cohesive band. COLLECTIVE SOUL is a true rock and roll effort, full of hard-edged, rhythmic guitar work, tempered by dips into the musicians' reserve of metal, blues and radio-friendly pop.
Ed Roland's songs are simple and straightforward, yet searching--as in "TheWorld I Know", an unpretentious observation of good and evil, laden with questions like "Has the sweet breeze blown?/Has all the kindness gone?" Vigorous riffs, a full-bodied '70sradio-rock sound, and an essentially optimistic outlook on life characterise this record, though there is the occasional surprise like the final track, "Reunion", a contemplative, gospel choir-backed blues tune.
Customer Reviews
Essential Album for any rock collection
Folky rock with exquisite use of orchestral instruments and melodic vocals. You cannot compare them to any other band as they are in a league of thier own with this album. If you like big acoustical guitars and great vocals then BUY it!!
Un-heard of in the UK (like most good music!) as most of the music here these days is for teenies in skirts, by people who have never touched an instrument.
This album set the standard for the rest of their albums and put the band on the musical map.
Definitive Rock
This album was my introduction to Collective Soul and after buying it i juat had to get their whole collection. Originally bought because i heard the catchy rocker Gel, it grew day by day on me and to be honest i havent found an album that manages to combine really good hard rock and amazing ballads since Def Leppard's Hysteria. It is hard to pick a favourite on this album, from the soulful "December" and "World I Know", to the catchy "Smashing Young Man" and "Gel", to the dark "Bleed", its all good on the ears, heart, mind and soul.
Very clean cut melodic rock and is a definite must have in any true rock fan's collection.
PERFECT
This is the best, most complete piece of work I have listened to for a very long time. Every song is great, hooks, guitar solos and perfect vocals. Hearing this is like tasting sherbet dip for the first time, you just don't believe how mind blowing it is but you always have to go back for another try. Smile from ear to ear and nod with satisfaction.
