Editorial Reviews

CD Description
Female R&B singers were expected to be forceful, big-voiceddivas (like Aretha Franklin) or come-hither seductresses (like Diana Ross), but Roberta Flack had her own unique approach. Flack's voice is vast, deep, and stately--where some singers confuse frenzy with passion, she is confident, majestic, and unhurried, intense in a profound yet reserved manner. Flack's gift is to draw attention to the song, not herself. Title song "Killing Me Softly" was her second number-one hit, establishing her as a major modern R&B stylist. She didn'tlimit herself by genre, either--Flack gave distinctive interpretations of songs by major folk singer/songwriters Janis Ian ("Jesse") and Leonard Cohen ("Suzanne"), and she played up-tempo tunes when it struck her fancy ("I'm The Girl"). KILLING ME SOFTLY perfectly captures Flack's distinct aesthetic at its most fully formed point.

Customer Reviews

a classic5
roberta flack is among those artist who aren't very well known to the general audience. while probably considered a great singer among people who are really into this kind of music, it should be made clear to others how great this music is. it never sounds too aged, is very soulfull and considering what a hit "killing me softly" by the fugees was proves how timeless roberta flack is

For once, nostalgia that has withstood the test of time.5
Many years ago I bought this in LP form. I played it constantly and then it went the way of all LPs, and, before I bought this, I probably hadn't heard it in over 20 years. Then I found the CD while browsing and bought it but all the time thinking: would it be as I remembered? Was it really that good?
The answer is yes, simply yes. Everybody knows Killing me softly, but the other songs are still as good as I thought they were. Jesse is a powerful but restrained song of yearning, I am the girl is just beautiful with jazz/blue overtones. And there is a cracking version of Leonard Cohen's Suzanne. Its a fabulous album, every track a winner.
And if you remember it from the first time round its a bonus!
