Could've been a lot better than this...
Make no mistake about it, after chalking up three consecutive number one hit singles, "Jive Bunny - The Album" could've been a lot better than this.
From the mixing team that brought a whole new meaning to the phrase 'novelty record', "The Album" mixes samples from four decades, beginning with the 40's right up to the glam rock days of the 70's. This, of course, was the Bunny's early days but still, it's not exactly the quintessential party album other critics would lead you to believe it is.
"Jive Bunny - The Album" kicks-off with the 12" extended version of the worldwide smash hit, 'Swing The Mood' -- classic rock n' roll tracks accompanied by a Glenn Miller medley. It's followed by 'Rock N Roll Party Mix' (which would be remixed and retitled as "That Sounds Good To Me" -- JB's fourth single release -- a couple of months after this album was released). Similar to 'Swing The Mood', this megamix reaffirmed Jive Bunny's love for rock n' roll -- and it ain't half bad either!
The 'Lovers Mix' isn't exactly a party track, still, it samples some of the well-known rock n' roll love songs from that era (inc. 'Donna', 'Hey Paul' and 'Rythmn Of The Rain'). I suppose this would be the ultimate megamix to 'make out' to back in the 50s, but now, it proves just how innocent those times really were.
'Do You Wanna Rock' is a tribute megamix to the glam rock days of the 1970s with a few of those original artists re-recording their tracks especially for this album (Noddy Holder, Roy Wood, Suzi Quatro and Gary Glitter). Never destined to be released as a single, at least 'Do You Wanna Rock' features a sample of Sweet's 'Teenage Rampage' which can't be all that bad!
The second half of "Jive Bunny - The Album" begins with another 12" extended version of a number one hit, 'That's What I Like'. Using the same formula as "Swing The Mood", this megamix is Jive Bunny at
their very best.
The listener to "Jive Bunny - The Album" then journeys back even further in time to the 40s with the next two megamixes. And this is where the album begins to wane. Naturally, they had to include the (instrumental) 'Glenn Miller Medley' since it was sampled on the "Swing The Mood" megamix. The samples for this medley was produced by the John Anderson Big Band - a real swing orchestra, which gives the mix a real 40s feel to it. (Funnily enough, Jive Bunny never used the John Anderson Big Band after this album and all future versions of 'Swing The Mood' were done on synthesisers which only spoiled things.)
'Swing Sisters Swing' is another megamix with a 40s theme, this time not only sampling Glenn Miller but vocal tracks from the Beverley/Andrews Sisters. As far as nostalgia goes, it's not that bad, but it seems out of place on what's more or less a rock n' roll party album. And at 8 minutes long, it does get a tad boring after a while.
My own personal favourite track on the album is the one used to end this musical journey. I'll never understand why 'Hopping Mad' wasn't released as a single because it uses the same ingredients as 'Swing The Mood' and 'That's What I Like' and -- in my opinion -- the results are much better. Heavily sampling the highly infectious 'March Of The Mods' to more classic songs from the 50s and 60s, 'Hopping Mad' just leaves you wanting more.
"Jive Bunny - The Album" is by no means the Master Mixers best offering. The follow-up album and the 1998 double CD set "Hop Around The Clock" are both far superior. Despite it flaws though, "Jive Bunny - The Album" is worth getting if only to listen to the original -- and best -- versions of "Swing The Mood" and "That's What I Like".
