Editorial Reviews

CD Description
Signed to a hefty record contract while still in his teens,Prince was only 19 when he wrote, produced and played all the instruments (the album's initial press release listed no less than 23) on his first album FOR YOU, a keyboard-dominated dance record that melds funk, soul and disco. While FOR YOU didn't sell as was well as was expected, "Soft and Wet" did make the singles chart and the lush ballad "Baby" established that besides writing great dance songs, Prince could sing as well as any of his R&B contemporaries. FOR YOU is a portentous roadmap for the direction Prince and popular music would take in the 1980s.

Customer Reviews

Very Underrated!5
Prince's first album is alot different to his others and may sound a little dated to some people. But if you like 70's disco type music then you will probably like it. If youre a prince fan (which you probably are reading this) then you i would adivse you to get this album as it has some real gems.

1. For You.
A great opening song full of soul and done only with vocals. 9/10

2. In Love.
Great catchy disco song with a nice keyboard intro. 9/10

3. Soft and wet.
A classic prince song with a fabulous keyboard solo! One of the albums higlights and one of prince's greatest. 10/10

4. Crazy You.
A nice relaxing acoustic song with soothing vocals. 9/10

5. Just As Long As We're Together.
This is my favourtie song off the album! It starts off with an epic keyboard intro and gets better and better. I just love the bass part at 3 mins 30 sec. Fantastic stuff! 10/10

6. Baby.
Quite a good song but i think one of the albums weak points. Still the vocals are sang with lots of soul tho. 7/10

7. My Love Is Forever.
The worst song on the album i think as i could never get into it. But it is relaxing and has some nice guitar work. 6/10

8. So Blue.
Another acoustic song with a cool intro and good vocals. Not as good as crazy you tho. 8/10

9. I'm Yours.
One of the highlights and the only song to have alot of guitar in it. A fantastic finish to a great album. 10/10

All of this and more is for you...4
In 1978 Prince released this; his debut album.
20 years old at the time and playing all his own instruments, his one-man band approach continued throughout much of his entire career. It's just a shame that the album that started it all sometimes goes un-noticed.

'For You' is very 'of-its-time' and beacuse of this it's easily Prince's most dated album, but in many ways it is a flawless debut in every aspect...
Every song is meticulously produced and you can tell Prince spent time trying to perfect the album, which is in fact 'For You's main problem: it lacks the spontaneity of Prince's later albums.

With the main drawbacks out the way, lets focus on the music...

The album opens with the barely 30 second long title track; an acapella piece showcasing Prince's vocals. It's a very unusual track to open an album let alone be the title track, but it has an undeniable charm to it.
As soon as you start getting in to the title cut, 'In Love' pops in...as with much of the album the track is lighthearted, and is an uptempo pop-funk number, more impressive though is the next track 'Soft & Wet', which lead to be his royal badnesses first ever commerical release, it's a stuttering funky pop song with a taster of some of Prince's risque lyrics which would typify his later work.

Similar to 'Soft & Weft' and 'In Love'; 'My Love Is Forever' is a charming upbeat track with a cute hook, it's the catchiest song on the album, and you'll probably be grinning ear-to-ear when you hear it.
The most impressive song on the album, musically, is 'Just As Long As We're Together', a funky disco-flavoured number which concludes with an excellent instrumetal coda.

'Baby' (the albums only conventional ballad) is a sweet (sometimes sickenenly sweet) string-laden song with a sugary instrumentation...in stark contrast, 'I'm Yours' is a roaring guitar fuelled rocker which seems strangely out of place with the rest of the album.

The two acoustic songs: 'Crazy You' and 'So Blue', are the main highlights on the album.
'Crazy You' is a delightful, attractive number and remains probably the strongest song on the whole album even with its short running time. 'So Blue' is also a gentle, breezy acoustic song and has a very intimate feel to it.

Groundbreaking it may not be, but 'For You' is a impressive (if flawed) debut album from the purple one.

One for the collector3
"For You" is Prince's 1978 debut album. For fans of the hits such as Little Red Corvette, 1999 and Purple Rain, this album will be disapointing. Prince's in-experience is somewhat apparent on this album and it can often sound somewhat cheesy. Every song is a love song and most are rather unappealing until u reach the very last track; "Im Yours", a track which on its own is worth buying the entire album for. Its funky guitar riffs and sheer rock beats will have u finding it positively impossible not to tap ur foot! All in all not one of his best but a hardy attempt for a 19 year old producing, arranging, composing and performing every track on his first album. Fans of Purple Rain, steer clear of this one but its a must for the avid Prince fam.
