Amazon.co.uk Review
You can dance and you probably will if you put on this 1987 compilation of the material girl's best jams. The eight-and-a-half minute "Into the Groove", remixed by Shep Pettibone, may be Madonna's single best tune and it's sure to fill the dance floor. There are only 10 tracks here, and a couple of songs get multiple remixes, but you do get "Holiday" and "Everybody", lesser known but not lesser grooves. Madonna had a few dance hits after this collection came out, and one day they'll most likely be a Madonna dance box set, but until then this will give you a fine aerobic workout. --Charles R. Cross
CD Description
Madonna's meteoric rise to stardom had as its springboard the early '80s NY club scene; dance music has provided a homebase for any of the musical journeys her widely varied career has seen her take. 1987's YOU CAN DANCE found the reigning queen of pop revisiting some of her more famous works, courtesy of the mixing skills of some of the friends she'd madealong the way, notably NY DJ and mix artist Jellybean Benitez (a name which was inseparable from the dance music genre at the time). Producer of Madonna's breakthrough "Holiday", he returns here with two slick remixes of the track, highlighting some of its many catchy instrumental nuances. The quintessential Madonna dance track, "Into The Groove", which inspired the album's title, bears the mark of editor Shep Pettibone. Pettibone's reassembling of the track turns it into anall-new dance experience, with inspired breaks and gliding accompaniment. The romantic classic "Over And Over" reinvents the original, augmenting Nile Rodgers's tight production with extra percussion and keyboards.

Terrific remix album
I'm one of those rare Madonna fans that has owned a copy of You Can Dance since its 1987 release. It features remixes or remastering of her best dance tracks from her first three albums, including the remixed "Into the Groove." It's interesting to note that this was the only Madonna album that that song was available on until the Immaculate Collection was released, and the remixed version that appeared on You Can Dance is the one that Madonna continues to perform live.
The album also features one track that, to my knowledge, was never released on any other: Spotlight. It's the last throwback to Madonna's 80s sound; her albums became more soundscape-y and much more advanced technologically after this. The entire album is a great throwback to mid-80s dance music and the remixes of "Over and Over" themselves make the album worth the price. Back in 1987, NOBODY was making music like this; and you can see where many of today's "chillout" and "trance" DJs got their inspiration. The remixes on this album are all inspired.
"You Can Dance" - the first ever remix album
I bought Madonna's two underrated albums on the same day -"Erotica" and "You Can Dance". I thought that "Erotica" was alot better and as a result, I didn't really play this CD that much. However, now I am addicted to this fantastic remix CD, which faetures mixes of Madonna's best, most loved and most popular hits of the 80s from her first 3 albums.
"Spotlight" is a great track, released on no other. "Holiday" has an 12" mix plus a dub mix. The dub mix flows nicely, as the 12" mix was changed only slightly. "Everybody" has a 12" mix, which, again, is very good! "Physical Attraction", besides "Spotlight", is my favourite track on the whole disc aswell as the remix for: "Into The Groove" which is completely original and great! (Another favourite) There are also remixes for "Over And Over", from "Like A Virgin" and "Where's The Party", from "True Blue", also excellent. There are dub versions of "Into The Groove" and "Where's The Party", which are also brilliant!
Overall - 10/10
Yet another splendid Madonna album, as she does me proud! Buy it!
Vintage Madonna.
"You Can Dance" is a snapshot of classic, vintage Madonna, a mix CD of her most popular dance hits back in the 1980s. Some would dismiss this CD, which was released in the fall of 1987, as a transparent cash-in, but it works surprising well as a dance record, even if the production does sound a bit dated. The kickoff, "Spotlight," is one of Madonna's very best songs, an underrated track that's strong enough to be released as a single. Fans will certainly be bobbing their heads to the beat in approval. The 12-inch versions of "Physical Attraction" and "Everybody" are gems that remind us of Madonna's r&b roots, while the extended mix of "Into the Groove" is even better than the edited version of the classic single. In addition, the CD version of "You Can Dance" has 3 dub versions of "Holiday," "Into the Groove," and "Where's the Party," and, unfortunately, they're all throwaways. It's not that they're terrible, but I think a better choice for a bonus track would have been the extended version of "Open Your Heart" or "Like a Virgin." Still, "You Can Dance" is a can't-fail purchase for both Madonna fans and lovers of 80s dance music. Grade: B.
