CD Description
AROUND THE FUR, the follow-up to Deftones' passionate, aggressive ADRENALINE, sees the California quartet expanding on the sheer rage of their earlier work, adding new, more sinister shades to their already extreme sound. The opening "My Own Summer (Shove It)", serves as an introduction to the album's sonic theme: sinewy guitars and eerie whispers alternatewith fast, violent crunch. Sepultura's Max Cavallero contributes guitar and vocals to "Headup", while "MX" finds singerChino trading off vocal lines with Annalynn Cunningham, (wife of Deftones' drummer Abe) in an acerbic take on the rock star mentality.
Vocal acrobat Moreno attacks a variety ofstyles: his breathy, psychotic recitations sound downright industrial, while the album's calmer, more brooding moments show his gift for haunting melody. Behind him, guitarist Stephen Carpenter's heavy wall of sound is astoundingly muscular, yet inspiringly agile. When Deftones' hellish fury hits full tilt, as it always does on this album, Moreno's voice erupts into screams which are best described as otherworldly, transforming this intense musical firestorm into a hurtling juggernaut of aggression.

the equally amazing, darker follow up to adrenaline
the deftones second outing gave us a darker and more original look at nu metal. both albums are equal, but those who prefer a diverse, haunting collage of heavy tracks (like me) will prefer this short and sweet gem. The best tracks are the two singles and dai the flu. my own summer is the best song to be played at full volume, an incredibly catchy and amazing guitar riff, a beatifully screamed chorus and wonderfully original lyrics. be quiet and drive is (in my opinion) the best deftones song because the vocals bring out the diversity of chino's voice, and the song has a repeated riff that drives the song forward backed up by thumping bass from chi cheng. dai the flu has a furiously catchy and dark tune which runs through the versus, perfecty complimenting such a song. max from sepultura and soulfly joins the party in the song 'headup' adding a more traditional metal feel to the album, followed by a great closure from mx, and the hidden track. However, every track is good, most are excellant and the album is definately worth getting before all others if you're into more original metal.
The best of all the new metal bands
With their second album, the Deftones have exceeded all expectations to deliver one of the best metal albums of the 1990s. After bursting on the scene with the brutal if slightly rushed 'Adrenaline', 'Around The Fur' successfully combine haunting and melodic vocals with aggressive and raging guitars. From the outstanding opening track 'My Own Summer' to album closer 'MX' with its edgy and subdued feeling, the album does not have a single filler track. Highlights are many especially 'Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away)' which could be the best song the Deftones have recorded so far. The title track itself would put most bands in the "post-Korn" metal scene to shame and 'Lotion' is destined to become a live favourite for years to come. What sets the band apart from the numerous US metal bands at the moment is the songs are not one-dimensional work-outs, going from emotional vocals to cutting edge guitars without breaking sweat. 'Around The Fur' is brutal, raw and aggressive, but at the same time opens up its soul and displays intelligence.
such a classic
deftones released a flawless album here,it summed up a genre of music when released ,it was so fresh,so vibrant and had great attitude, there isnt a bad song on here and some 10 years after its release it still sounds stunning so thats a classic, deftones have never bettered this and if they do then we are all in for a real treat, classics such as 'my own summer (shove it) and 'be quiet and drive' are on here among other gems,i guess it could be described as nu metal at times but not too much nu metal sounds good today, this does,i imagine most have this album and if you dont then get it,it is cracking from start to finish
