Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Heralded as one of the greatest live blues albums ever recorded, this set catches the singer-guitarist as his star was in ascent: in 1964 playing Chicago's answer to Harlem's Apollo Theatre--the Regal. King's performance is visceral: he sings so hard that gravel flies even in his clearest high notes. And his trademark single-note guitar lines are sharp and steely, matching his voice with trembling vigour. He offers early hits like "How Blue Can You Get", "Worry, Worry" and "You Upset Me Baby" to what's essentially his adopted hometown crowd (by his own account, King had already played the theatre hundreds of times). They give him a hero's welcome; in fact, the audience's screaming enthusiasm is distracting. But rarely has a love-fest of this magnitude between a performer and fans been documented. --Ted Drozdowski

CD Description
No matter how good the studio sessions were, B.B. King was at his best on stage in front of an appreciative, if not ecstatic crowd. This set, recorded at Chicago's premier black theatre on Novermber 21, 1964, delivered just that. Despite the less than perfect recording conditions, at a time when technology had yet to catch up with the demands placed upon it, the King of the Blues delivers a definitive performance ona programm that includes his recent single "Help The Poor".Also included in this set is a clutch of songs that were responsible for much of his success, "Everyday I Have The Blues", "Sweet Little Angel", "It's My Own Fault", "You Upset MeBaby" and "Woke Up This Morning" among them. The band, including tenorman Johnny Board and organist Duke Jethro, is lean but tight, providing King with a springboard from which toleap into flights of immaculate guitar playing and singing.

BB at his best5
One of BB's best. Big, brassy, full of verve. His stardom shines through on this infectious ride through one of the best live blues perfomances of all times. Don't intellectualise over it, just listen. The, what would be a mainly black, audience are rapturous. BB showed the way and black consciousness learned. But let's share it. Blues belongs to everyone. Albums like this broke barriers. You just can't help but get on it when listening. A goodtime bounce through BB's favourites helped in no small portion by a rythm section as tight as Getty's wallet. This band honed to mutual perfection were as close to BB as you could get. Playing their home town Chicago obviously inspired them to greatness. They lived up to that inspiration and didn't let the home of the blues down.

A must.

Makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up5
I hadn't bought a BB King album before, and bought this on the strength of the reviews on this page. I am absolutely blown away by the musicianship on show here. BB King's voice is fantastic, and Lucille is really on top form too !

I'd definately recommend it. Buy it for rough and ready blues, delivered by one of the most evocative voices you're ever likely to hear.

An awesome live performance.4
This cd is an (unusual) live recording where it feels as if you are really seeing BB King playing his best in 1964. The songs are an impressive fusion of the well known voice and guitar with an energetic, funky band and the all-important interaction of the audience just adds so much feeling. Play it loud in your car and you could be there......
