Best in the 90's
It is a shame this album went by practically unnoticed. Its a shame because it really is the best Duran Duran album of the 1990's. This doesn't mean I'm saying Durans other 90's releases are rubbish, on the contary. The Wedding Album saw Duran back in the charts (Ordinary World reached number 6 in the UK charts) and boasted excellent writting skills, the sound was crisp and Le Bons vocals in top form. Then two years later 'Thank You' was released. Although a good effort-it was in my opinon the worst album the boys have ever produced. Luckily, 2 years later 'Meddazaland' showed up. A finly crafted album consisting of songs with a bitter and dark sound and theme (maybe to reflect 'Thank You''s failure?). Once agian Simon Le Bon sings beautifully with a edge that suggest he is thinking deeply about each individual word as he pronounces them. Nick Rhodes' keyboards equals Simons vocals to give an even delivery. Nick also provides the vocals for the title track and although he doesn't actually sing, his voice presents well his love for poetry. Warrens giutars are deep and bitter and serve up an over all grittyness to the album. Meddazaland shows a side of Duran never before seen - a more dirty, bitter face that truely has worked to produce an album worthy of the 'best since Rio' title.
return to form
I purchased this c.d when it first came out in the States in 1997, having been a life long Duranie, I was hungry for some new material after the disappointing thank you project.The first track "Meddazzaland" is an abstract piece and the first to feature Nick Rhodes on full time vocal duties! Please dont be put off by this!
Track 2 "Big Bang Generation" is a fine return to form, as is "Electric Barbarella". Anyone who appreciates 80's Duran will love these two tracks.
"Out of my Mind" is a criminally ignored mid-paced Duran classic.
The album carries on in this vein up to track 9 "Michael, you've got a lot to answer for" which is a touching tribute to their friend Michael Hutchence. Track 10 "Midnight sun" is another classic Duran ballad.
In my opinion track 11 "So long Suicide" is the stand-out track on the album, highlighting Warrens' guitar playing abilities, Nicks arrangement, and Simons' excellent vocals.
The album closes with the strange "Undergoing Treatment" this appears to be a tongue-in-cheek view of themselves and the pop star life.
I fully recommend this album to any Duran fan.
A crime to not be released
Im a hardcore Duranie owning all their albums, and this one was definatly the hardest to come by, seeing as it wasnt released in the UK. after finally getting a copy, i can say its one of their best albums. this album is a far cry from the cheesy 80s era of duran, and from the opening Medazzaland (featuring Rhodes doing a stellar job on vocals) you can feel the darker tones. Midnight sun is my standout track, and Electric Barberella is much much better than the edited version on Greatest. If you can get a copy, i highly recommend it, but only to hardcore fans, if you left the band after & and The Ragged Tiger then you wont appreciate this fantastic album.
