An extremely strong follow-up to the superb NICK OF TIME, LUCK OF THE DRAW continues where that Grammy winner left off--and in a way, surpasses it. Co-produced by Raitt and Don Was, LUCK OF THE DRAW again plays on the singer's rich blues roots and potent slide guitar, with a fair share of the softer, lovelorn ballads that distinguished NICK OF TIME. A gutsywoman who revels in her sexuality, Raitt shapes "Something to Talk About" and the reggae-tinged "Come To Me" into brilliant come-ons, then counters the seduction hauntingly with songs like the heartbreaking "I Can't Make You Love Me", featuring Bruce Hornsby on piano.
The complicated emotional reverie of "One Part Be My Lover" emerged from a poem that Raitt's husband Michael O'Keefe left on her pillow after the couple had argued one night. "Not the Only One" is a beautiful, buoyant love song with Raitt's sand-and-smoke vocals riding Paul Brady's lyrics with reverent, hopeful abandon. Further establishing the fiery redhead as the grand blues mama (not to mention one of the most formidable slide guitarists) of the contemporary rock scene, LUCK OF THE DRAW is Raitt at her raunchy and romantic best.

Bonnie's all time bestseller
'Luck of the draw' was the follow-up to the 'comeback' record 'Nick of Time', it was also produced by Don Was and follows a similar template. However, it was even more successful than 'Nick of Time' selling seven million copies and spawning two US top 20 singles. The title track is a brooding Paul Brady song and another Brady song "Not the only one" is also included, with both songs having a folky/Celtic feel that make them slightly different to Bonnie's increasingly AOR sound. Elsewhere Bonnie turns to songwriters like John Hiaitt for "No business" and Womack and Womack for "Good man, good woman" - performed as a duo with Delbert McClinton. For me the two real highlights are "I can't make you love me" a beautiful, bittersweet ballad with great piano from Bruce Hornsby, and also Bonnie's own song "All at once", a heart-wrenching ballad which must be one of the best songs that she has written. I think this was a very professional, well produced release that contained a good mix of songs, some great playing and fully deserved all the success that it received.
If there weresix stars I'd give them
I was introduced to the music of Bonnie Raitt many years ago ... and it was probably one of the most significant events of my life.
She is undoubtedly the best female vocalist currently still making records .... and this is arguably her finest album. I have been known to claim to friends that if I was ever forced to pick only one album to take on a desert island ... then this would be the one.
I have thousands of CDs in my collection .... but this one is NEVER more than two feet away from my CD player.
Worth the cover price just for 'I Can't Make You Love Me' alone .... a song which moved me to tears when she sung it (just to me of course!) at Manchester Free Trade Hall a few years ago.
Just buy it. If you don't like it after three or four plays you haven't got music in your soul.
Great rock music and some sad songs to boot
An excellent compilation of rock songs and romantic songs. Maturer voice and definitely a must for the Bonnie Raitt collection artiste!
