Of course, it is Wicked Pickett's riveting, gravel-filled voice that makes it all happen.
Arranged chronologically, A MAN AND A HALF begins with "I Found a Love" (a 1961 single from Pickett's first band, the Falcons) and ends with a live version of "Funky Broadway" (performed at a '71 concertin Ghana). In between are such unassailable classics as thechugging "Mustang Sally", the call-and-response dance anthem "Land of 1000 Dances", and the soulster's signature tune--"In the Midnight Hour". The set is devoid of filler; the non-hit singles are of amazing quality and even Pickett's gritty reading of "Hey Jude" (with Duane Allman on guitar) has its unique charms. This is an indisputable cornerstone of any soul lover's collection.

Pickett at his most Wicked!
A great album, stuffed to the seams of both his solo hits, as well as tracks with the Falcons. The album includes cover notes chronicling the emergence of Pickett's career with photos from the era, including tables of the songs' chart positions, release dates etc. The real treat are the two live tracks. I should say "live `n' burnin'" as specified on the track listings. On CD 1 we have "In the Midnight Hour" with Booker T. and the MGs with the Mar-Key Horns backing with the Marvellous Montague MC preaching in the background. CD 2 has the stomping track "Funky Broadway" as performed live in Ghana at a music festival. All great stuff on 2 CDs. Every Pickett fan must own this album.
