Customer Reviews

A one-off classic5
This is probably the best thing Eric Burdon ever did. It is bluesy, and yet very different from most other blues you're likely to have heard. Eric tells weird and wonderful stories, talking half the time rather than singing ( but when he does sing he has one of the best voices around. )
War produces some marvellous and memorable backing, and their is some great blues soloing which keeps your attention.
Unfortunately neither Eric nor War on their own rose to these heights again.

Eric Burdon proves there was life after The Animals5
This was great debut album from War - moving Eric a long way away from his psychedelic stuff with the second incarnation of The Animals. This is deep, drawling, dark blues - smokey rooms, deep south and late night after hours music. Eric's vocal is everything you'd expect but the wailing harmonica and moody sax give these numbers a chocolatey depth. The piano\keyboards are insistent and persistent. The AfroCuban rhythms and Brass sections and gospel choirs - oh it's all too much!

This isn't guitar based blues but it's certainly blues none the less. It's ballsy and brassy and dripping with love and sincerity. The tribute to Roland Kirk is beautiful. Tobacco Road is a million miles from the Nashville Teens original version but that's its magic even at 12 minutes long. It's both familiar and alien at the same time - like everything else on the album. The production values are top quality, not something that can be said of many of Eric's offerings.

Suspect this would fulfil a niche in most peoples collections that just isn't represented elsewhere. House of the Rising Sun or Don't let me be Misunderstood this isn't (thank the Lord)but it's still an excellent timeless listen. You've got to come back to Mother Earth!!
