Editorial Reviews

CD Description
A re-issue of a 1973 album, HEY NOW HEY finds the Queen of Soul taking her untouchably powerful set of pipes somewhat leftfield of the straight-ahead Atlantic groove formula of the late '60s. This is not to suggest that the record is neither soulful nor funky. On the contrary, it is both. But, fromthe ambiguous, trippy cover art to the lush, Quincy Jones string arrangements within, it is clear that HEY NOW HEY is also not the usual collection of Franklin singles.
Workingclosely with Jones, and taking cues from the extended, elaborate, and visionary works of other soul music contemporaries-especially Issac Hayes, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye-Franklin fuses elements of blues, jazz, and church music, winding the album together with superior production and an almostpsychedelic orchestral finesse. Included among the originals are fresh readings of Bobby Womack's "That's The Way I Feel About You" and "Somewhere" from WEST SIDE STORY. In all, HEY NOW HEY is a unique and noteworthy addition to the Franklin catalogue.

Customer Reviews

Excellent album5
This album is rarely rated as one of arethas top quality ones. However it is outstanding and very heartfelt especially the ones that Aretha wrote herself. The extra track (Master of eyes) is probably one of the best on the album it is so flavoursome. This is not Arethas usual style it is very experimentive and is a really good listen.

saved by 2 superb tracks3
This reissue of the 1973 album finds Aretha Franklin in search of a new sound. As her strenghth are strong vocals over great rhythms this hodgepodge of jazz, pop and soul tracks is only saved by two magnificent cuts: the hitsingle Angel and the 7 minutes soul searching blues Just right tonight, where Aretha just cuts loose. As this last track is never featured on compilations this album remains the only way to get it.
