Amazon.co.uk Review
Sinead O'Connor's second album features her cover of "Nothing Compares 2 U", the Prince song that turned her into a major star, but her own song writing was also arguably at its peak here. I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got is a satisfying compendium of styles--the hip-hop and folk hybrid of "When I Am Stretched On My Grave", the punky "Jump In The River" and the haunting acapella of the title track. Best of all are the mournful acoustic tracks: "The Last Day Of Our Acquaintance" is a searing, lyrical account of a divorce, and "You Cause As Much Sorrow" is a beautiful and terrifying testament to the power that parents have to hurt their children. Backed by former members of Adam's Ants and the Smiths, Sinead O'Connor's voice soars over the album like a frightened angel. --James Swift
CD Description
This is the impassioned, creative breakthrough Sinead O'Connor was working toward with her extraordinary debut THE LIONAND THE COBRA. Boldly combining O'Connor's hard-rock, alternative-rock, hip-hop and Celtic-folk influences, I DO NOT WANT WHAT I HAVEN'T GOT was widely heralded as one of the bestalbums of 1990. On it O'Connor proves herself a first-rate writer, articulate, perceptive and penetrating. Her vocal magic is well under control, from tempestuous command to all-out fury; she shows that she is a world-class singer, way beyond the restrictions of being an alternative-rock diva.
The obvious highlight among highlights is O'Connor's definitive rendition of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U" (originally performed by The Family). Other remarkable songs here include "Black Boys On Mopeds", a political treatise on Britian's racial affairs, and "The Emperor's New Clothes", a pop-funk number in which O'Connor provides some anecdotal background for her seemingly strange behavior. There is not one disappointing track on this album.

Nothing Compares 2 This
I bought The Lion And The Cobra (Sineads debut album) a few years back on the strength of Troy (an absolute classic) but avoided getting I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got as I suspected it wasn't as good. Yes, Nothing Compares 2U is great but I had my doubts about the rest. Then someone gave me a tape with the track The Emporers New Clothes on it, and I finally gave in and bought the cd.
Very pleasantly suprised - the quality is as good as her debut, very well written songs and Sineads voice is amazingly powerful and full of emotion. Maybe one of these days I'll get around to trying her later albums, but for the moment this is permanently in my cd player (PS if you haven't already guessed, The Lion And The Cobra is a must-have too!)
Beautiful in an unusual way
Nobody sings the way Sinéad O'Connor does. Her voice is fragile yet aggressive, her lyrics are poetic yet controversial. Her mind is sad yet aware.
Each song on »I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got« (such an uncommercial album title would only work out for Sinéad) has its own soul, its own story, its own sadness. Beautifully sung by the Irishwoman, and in a way that no cover version will be able to keep up with the depth that she has put into it all.
A unique album that is very hard not to be touched by. It will always stand as a legendary album.
Top quality
Sineads best - sung straight from the heart with a haunting voice.
An album well worth having.
So much more than Nothing compares 2 U.
It took me about 3 plays to get really into it but it was worth the patience.
You will play this for years to come.
Emotion in music.... heart felt songs..... you cant beat it...
Play it loud, in the dark & lose yourself in it.
Buy this ...
