Cissy struts her stuff
This album, which I am trying to get my hands on is absolutely fabulous. This is the album from which I learnt what "phrasing" really means. You understand why Cissy was so much in demand with everyone from Aretha Franklin to Elvis Presley.
Forget Whitney, she pales besides her mother, here Cissy does what only the greatest can do: she re-invents a song, suddenly there is a poignancy, a wistful tone to "Be my Baby".Check out "When Something is Wrong with My Baby" again a beautiful working of a song which has been so overdone, and I personally feel that her "Midnight Train to Georgia" outstrips the Gladys Knight version by miles...
Like Aretha, Cissy Houston underplays rather than overplays her vocal range, you are pulled into her vocals rather than battered over the head with vocal gymnastics. This is a fairly slow album and won't suit every mood, but should be available rather than on this limited range which makes me have to check back to see if I can ever get my hands on it...
