Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.com
Ani DiFranco's fondness for cheeky self-effacement marks her fourth album, Not a Pretty Girl. Having redefined our whole concept of cult following, the funky, punky singer/songwriter has parlayed her prowess for six-string blues guitar into an alternative acoustic sound all its own. This album marks real growth for the musician. Songs like the title track or "Worthy" are more fully realized than many of her earlier pieces, which lean toward artful scat or spare guitar and vocal arrangements. It also precedes DiFranco's more experimental work, which recurs with increasing frequency on subsequent recordings. --Nick Heil

this album is very good and well worth having, however i still can't help feeling that although her studio stuff is interesting her live stuff is definitely in a completely different league, live at carnegie hall, the version of gratitude on that album blows me away every time!!

Great album, Ani's best in my opinion5
I've now got 3 or 4 albums of the several ones that ANi has produced, but this one, which I bought first, to me seems like her best. There's some masterpieces like the title track and "million you never made", and in general it's got the best songs in terms of composing skills. Since Ani's talent lies mainly in that, as its music is very crude and simple in terms of instruments, I really recommend buying this album. If you've never listened to Ani, it's really folk music, therefore the beauty of it is her composing capacity, there's no amazing guitar playing (although she's very good at it!) or some particular playing skills, just great songs and beautiful words.

ani's coming of age5
Not A Pretty Girl marks the turning point in Ani Di Franco's career. It embraces the concerns and 'angst' of earlier albums, with the start of the variety of musical ideas that are so prevelant on her later albums.32 Flavours, and the title track Not A Pretty Girl are classic Ani.Whilst the beautiful Hour Follows Hour is understated but lyrically one of the most powerful descriptions of acceptance and resignation i have ever heard. Simply genius.Out of all her albums Dilate, Little Plastic Castles and this one are must haves, for everyone, but parcularly women who fail to hear their real feelings heard in the popular female artists that litter our charts with (often male written) drivel. Ani is a saviour. And if you ever get to catch her live... a truly life changing experience.
