wolfstone's best
Definitely the most satisfying Wolfstone album, created at the height of their powers before multiple tragedies, line-up changes and label setbacks destroyed the band's confidence and sense of direction. This is unashamedly loud, swaggering Scottish folk-rock, with both bagpipes and electric guitars turned up to 11 and a foundations-shaking rhythm section.
The collision of old and new is reflected in the songs, which range from self-penned protests about the Irish Troubles (Holy Ground) and the Ku Klux Klan (White Gown) to adapted Norse myths (Sea King) and, in one of the few quiet moments, the Highland Clearances lament Braes of Sutherland. The latter gives way to a stunningly beautiful slow air, played through once gently on Duncan Chisholm's fiddle, before the pipes, drums and guitars kick in for a thunderous, triumphant finale.
Obviously not one for folk purists, but this is one of the defining folk-rock releases of the 90s.
