Customer Reviews
Mixed singles.
About half these tracks are the mono originals. Most of them were successful when first released. Chess had a style of its own as well as a sound. Even when making records in Muscle Shoals that style shone through. There are wonderful recordings here from Etta James, The Radiants and many others. Sixties soul at its best.
Soul Music at its Best
It is exceptional for a compilation to incorporate so many classic sounds that are so uniquely different. There is something here for all soul music lovers. My particular favourites range from the bluesy I've Been So Lonely - Cookie & The Cupcakes through deep soul treasures Temptation 'Bout To Get Me - Knight Brothers, Soul of A Man - Fontella Bass and Don't Pass Me By - Big Maybelle, the vocal harmonies of Voice Your Choice - The Radiants, the evocative I Can't Make It Without You - Fred Hughes, the sweet soul of Searchin for My Love - Bobby Moore & The Rythm Aces, the mid-tempo Selfish One - Jackie Ross and the uptempo Don't Knock Love - Baraba Carr and Hold On - The Radiants. I could go on - they are all gems.
Thirty years of memories
If there is one CD that illustrates the depth and quality of 60's soul music this is it. Tony Clarke's "Entertainer" must be the most emotive number of all time, and if it is to be judged it must be against such others as "This Old Heart of Mine" or "open the Door to Your Heart". Listen to it over and over, or put it on towards the end of a party.
