TEN, Pearl Jam's debut album, was released less than a month before Nirvana's NEVERMIND, and although it took longer toclimb the pop charts it also hung around longer, eventuallyoutselling its Seattle rival. Together, the two albums reinvigorated rock and roll, whose share of the pop marketplace had been slipping through the late 1980s. But while Nirvana's bruising punk rock was an all-out assault on the classic-rock dinosaur, Pearl Jam's accomplished hard rock was an attack from within the system.
The drawn-out, bluesy guitar riffing and anthemic choruses that dominated TEN instantly gave away roots in the same popular hard rock and heavy metal that Nirvana was intent on crushing. Indeed, before forming Pearl Jam, guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament (who between them wrote most of the music on TEN) were the core of two '70s-influenced metal bands, Green River and MotherLove Bone. But in place of the self-aggrandising, larger-than-life singers that led most such bands, Gossard and Ament found Eddie Vedder, a ravage-voiced vocalist more apt to identify with the abused and misunderstood children he was singing about than with any other rock stars. When he exploded into one of TEN's many memorable choruses, Vedder offered transcendence for the people who needed it most.
The storyline of the album's breakthrough single, "Jeremy", was typically vague and elusive (despite a highly suggestive video), but the message was not. The meek and the misunderstood, PearlJam seemed to be saying, would rise and inherit the world, even if it was only a world of their own invention.

Timeless
Probably one of the top 20 rock albums of the past 20 years, I still consider this to be Pearl Jam's best album to date. Possibly even Pearl Jam's career defining album, which is unusual for a band to be at the absolute peak of their game on releasing their debut.

Penned and sung by Eddie Vedder, without a doubt one of rocks great vocalists, this album has a fair few of PJ's best-loved tracks.

If you're relatively new to Pearl Jam's music, I would recommend you buy either this release or their greatest hits album, 'rearviewmirror: Greatest hits 1991-2003'.

Fan favourites on this album are "Jeremy", "Alive", Even Flow" and "Black".
Some tracks I rate highly would be "Alive", "Garden", "Jeremy" and "Release".

Still, if you don't fancy buying the album, at least download some of the tracks I mentioned. You won't be dissapointed.

If you're a fan of Pearl Jam you might also like The Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Audioslave, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots or even Nirvana. If you like this record I would highly recommend listening to 'Siamese Dream' by The Smashing Pumpkins, or 'Superunknown' by Soundgarden, which is apparently one of Eddie Vedder's favourite albums.

Still the best
Pearl Jam's debut album, although becoming distant in the past, became a legend among the new coming grunge / hard rock bands back in the early 90s.

A timeless album, a mark in every rocker's collection. Even after all this years, this is the ONE album, the best Pearl Jam album ever (in my opinion, of course).

Timeless songs like Even Flow, Alive, Black, Oceans, Jeremy, Wash... i could go on and on until i reached the entire album song list.

After 10... never did Pearl Jam achieve this unique feeling of power and balance in one album.

Black and Oceans are my favorite songs ever and the lyrics... pure poetry. You could write the songs of this album in a poetry book, a heavy, disturbing poetry book... unforgetable, unavoidable...

Simple unique.

A Moment in History
This album is one of the finest pieces of work from the "grunge" era. Quite simply put, it rocks. There is a wide range of emotion that just seeps off this disk. There are so many good songs that it is hard to talk about them all.

"Jeremy," a song about a boy in Texas who killed himself in front of his class at school, is the song that drove Pearl Jam into the limelight. The song is so racked with pain and anguish. It is just one great example of the caliber of music that is "Ten."

"Once," "Evenflow," and "Why Go" are all hard-rockin' tracks on the record. Each is very emotionally charged. "Black," "Alive," and "Release" are all more along the lines of melodic rock. . . None of which are ballads, but they are much slower tempo songs. Every song is this record is top shelf. The three bonus songs on the UK release are great, originally, I had to buy singles to get those tracks.

Like I said before, this record is just amazing. Pearl Jam helped pave the way for an era. And in turn, they have paved the way for many of today's bands to make their music. Eddie Vedder and the gang made a record in "Ten" that has stood the test of time. It is many times over platinum with good reason: it is spectacular. Pearl Jam is amazing in the fact that they are still making music. If you look, they are one of the only bands from their era that have survived, both as a band and actually still being alive. This album is a must have in any CD collection, even better if you can find it on wax. Viva la vinyl!
