Amazon.co.uk Review
Way Beyond Blue is Catatonia's criminally overlooked debut album, full to bursting with sparkling pop tunes, made all the more magical by Cerys Matthews distinctive voice (which is one part angelic croon, one part rough smokers growl). "You've Got A Lot To Answer For" is the top 5 hit that never was, combining the trauma of a pregnancy test with a tune that leaves you beaming, while "Sweet Catatonia" is a joyful statement of intent. During the quieter moments, on the likes of the gorgeous "Whale" and "Dream On", the music shimmers like a mirage that might disappear any second. When this first came out, Catatonia were dismissed as your average indie band; it's amazing how wrong people can be. The band may deal with the everyday subjects that effect us all, but most of us could never come up with anything as simultaneously delicate and aggressive as this. --Emma Johnston
Customer Reviews
"Forgive Me If I Seem To Be Impatient And Obscene"
Forget the sales figures, forget the magazine album reviews claiming International Velvet was their finest hour, this was them at their best.
This album has an almost magical quality, making you feel like floating away to a mystical world. From the drum beats of Lost Cat, to the dreamy Way Beyond Blue and Gyda Gwen (hidden track), this is an album you can listen to over and over again without getting sick of. Someone once said the sign of a great album is one that ages well, and this is surely one that could be classed as just that.
A must for any fan, it's certainly their best, and counted among one of my favourite albums.
My Chill Out Album.
I love Catatonia and I love this album. This is my chill out album as it never fails to relax me. My parents say this album is depressing but they have no taste :-D.
When this was released Catatonia were an average Indie Underground band with 3 failed singles. This album all though not a commercial sucess is one of there best albums (even tho there are only 4!)
Highlights of the album - well they would have to be Painful and Bleed. They are amazing. Low points the 5min + gap between Way Beyond Blue and the bonus track!

A refreshing new experience in music - Highly Recommended
This album is one of the best of Catatonia. Why? Because it is one of those albums that you could just listen time and time again without getting tired of it. That husky little bedroom voice of hers haunts and taunts relentlessly so that no-one escapes the magic of the songs! Both angry and melancholic, the songs are reflections of our own anxieties and dreams, so I would say "Buy it!" for life is too short not to enjoy it with good music!
