Product Description

Prior to signing with Buddah and recording SAFE AS MILK, Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band had a two single deal with A&M Records in 1965. THE LEGENDARY A&M SESSIONS assembles those two 45s along with a fifth song, the previously unreleased "Here I Am, I Always Am". Clearly indebted to blues andR&B artists such as Howlin' Wolf and Johnny "Guitar" Watson, this southern California band was not alone in their explorations--contemporaries included Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal's Rising Sons and Lowell George's Factory. Beefheart was soon to further personalise his approach, but these first recordings are an important look at his beginnings. By strange confluence, the sessions were produced by David Gates, later to find fame in the soft-rock band Bread.

brilliant4
The Captain's first recordings show the R'n'B origins of the Magic Band, and showcase their already able talents. A brilliant cover of 'Diddy Wah Diddy' and the Captain's amazing voice and harmonica on 'Frying Pan' are gems entirely unlike later work, though just as good. Raw, and very danceable blues.

Short but sweet.5
this isn't toe tapping..It's foot stomping !
Kickin' off with the splendid "Diddy wah diddy" the raw blues accompanied by the beefheart growl must be played to ALL the neighbours at once whether they would like to hear it or not.
My only gripe being the CD is far too short at a mere 12 minutes ....
