An e.p. of live tracks from the 'Devotional' tour
This e.p. of live tracks is a companion piece to 'Songs of Faith & Devotion Live'& the 'In Your Room'-singles; in that they are taken from the gruelling 'Devotional Tour' (which resulted in near-death, breakdowns, a key-member of the band leaving, euphoria, fatigue & a whole lot more!).
The lead track is 'Condemnation', which didn't sound how you would expect a Mode song to sound with that title (what should have sounded like 'Halo' or 'Shake the Disease' sounds more like 'Give Out'-Primal Scream or 'Let It Flow'-Spiritualized). The gospel-thang was added to 'Songs of Faith & Devotion' and alienated quite a lot of old Mode fans. 'Condemnation' signified the period of blandness in Depeche's music (see 'Goodnight Lovers', 'Get Right With Me', 'Freestate'). It does sound pretty-soulful in retrospect- though the 'Paris Mix' is a superior-version...'Violator'-classics 'Personal Jesus' & 'Enjoy The Silence' were the first encore of the 'Devotional Tour' and are pretty great (though Gahan's rock'n'roll banter "Can I see your hands?", "Come on!" etc can invade perfectly fine songs!). The best track here is a faithful-take on another 'Violator' song, 'Halo'- as it came in the first-half of the set Gahan sticks doesn't get diverted in rock-god cliches. This was one of the highlights of the 'Devotional Tour'- along with 'Never Let Me Down Again', 'Policy of Truth' & 'Everything Counts'. The Mode have been playing it again on the current 'Exciter Tour'- which proves that it is one of their durable classics...This e.p. is probably only for the completist- fan, while it is a nice souvenier of a concert that I enjoyed at the time, the studio-versions remain superior.
