Clever lyrics let down by tunelessness3
The album opens with Key To Her Ferrari, a jazzy, orchestral piece with spoken vocal parts. Airhead is a mid-tempo ballad with some pop appeal and Hot Sauce falls within the same style, somewhat tepid although the arrangement is complex and interesting. Pulp Culture is an exemplar of the the lack of melodicism that makes this album lukewarm in comparison to his better work. The slowly lilting love song My Brain Is Like A Sieve is mildly appealing, as is the atmospheric The Ability To Swing. Budapest By Blimp is another slow ballad with atmospheric vocals and evocative instrumentation. Overall the album is disappointing, lacking the catchy hooks and quirky charms of Dolby's best tracks like Hyperactive and She Blinded Me With Science. I recommend Retrospectacle: the Best of Thomas Dolby for the most enduring work of this talented musician.

... from Dolby. Yes, let's replace our old vinyl; oh was that hi-hat really in the mix? If you love this stuff, it'll be because you've always loved it. Great illustration

A CD out of the top drawer5
This is one of those rare albums that feels as fresh and groovy today as it did when it came out around 16 years ago. It's not necessary to analyse this album too much , considering that TD apparently wrote all the tunes in just a few hours so that the musicians he was auditioning would have something to play. This is a fun album with plenty of get-up-and-go and lots of funk. The production is warm, crisp and clear; so whacking the volume right up just adds to the listening pleasure. Stand out tracks for me are Key To Her Ferrari, The Ability To Swing, My Brain Is Like A Sieve and Budapest By Blimp. While the other tracks may not be quite so strong, they're still pretty damn good. It's very hard to liken Thomas Dolby to anyone else but he's certainly got bags of talent. If you've never heard anything by him, then this will be a great start. Having said that, I reckon this is as good as it gets with TD - its my favourite album of his by a long stretch.
