The Tops At Their Best in Stereo !
I'm not going to waste your time by gushing about one of Tamla Motown's most famous acts - just to say that between 1964 and 1966 they were given their very best material by Holland Dozier Holland - and from 1967 there was a massive decline in quality . Their performances were always powerful but *Bernadette* and particularly *Walk Away Renee* and *Simple Game* can't hold a candle to memorable songs like *I Can't Help Myself*, *It's The Same Old Song* and *Ask The Lonely*
All the tracks are the original recordings digitally remastered and all in excellent sharp and exciting stereo !
There are five singles on the cd - apart from the three mentioned above there's *Reach Out I'll Be There* and *Baby I Need Your Loving*
Other standouts include the original version of Holland Dozier Hollands up tempo stormer *Helpless* (perhaps even more exciting than Kim Weston's
version also for Motown), the atmospherically tuneful and dramatic *Where Did You Go* and *Sad Souvenirs* . All these three were worthy and would have been outstanding single releases in their own right.
There is a brief and informative liner note included on the cd. Apart from 'Shake me Wake Me* *7 Rooms of Gloom* *Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever*, *I Got A Feeling* , *I'll Turn To Stone*, Something About You* and *Standing In the Shadows Of Love* which were the other tracks of the highest quality recorded at Motown -the Tops did their best work after 1972 when they left Motown. Very exciting tremendously danceable music. Hope this helps you in your choice. Avoid The Ultimate Collections of the Motown Acts if you want stereo recordings as they're all in mono......There's nothing wrong in that as all these Motown singles were only in mono anyway when we bought them - but stereo does make for a more enveloping sound ! Highly recommended.
