Utterly Essential
Awesome, brilliant, incredible - words which are sprinkled in the air like confetti by over-enthusiastic reviewers, but which cannot begin to do justice to "Like a Rolling Stone", the GREATEST ROCK SONG IN THE HISTORY OF MUSIC. That's not an opinion, it's a fact. Dylan was the greatest lyricist / songwriter / poet of the 20th century. LISTEN to the words. Dylan's best tracks stand alongside the operas of Verdi, the paintings of Van Gogh, and the photographs of Ansel Adams as the most inspiring, relevant, exciting and brilliant works in their field. Apart from the incredible riches to rags "Like a Rolling Stone" there are many other amazing tracks - the rebellious "Times they are a Changin", the beautiful "Just Like a Woman" and "Lay Lady Lay"; the classics "Mr Tambourine Man" made famous by the Byrds, "All Along the Watchtower" made equally famous by the great Jimi Hendrix, and "Knockin' on Heavens Door". Much of Dylan's music is an aquired taste, and everyone will have tracks that they worship and other tracks that they find mediocre. Personally I would have sacrificed some of the remaining tracks, to be able to include "Gates of Eden" ( b-side of Like a Rolling Stone ), "It's all Over Now Baby Blue", and the bitter and heartbreaking story of failed marriage "It Ain't Me Babe" - beyond doubt one of Dylan's finest creations. This album, despite those shortcomings is an utterly essential item for anyone who claims to be interested in music. Amazon only permit a maximum 5 star rating for albums, "like a Rolling Stone" alone deserves a thousand stars for God's sake.
amazing but....
True this is an amazing colection so most of dylans best work, BUT how can 'the best of' miss out two of his best songs, changing of the guard and the proof that dylan is the best song writer , the hurricane. amazing but could be better, if you've not heard the hurricane check out the lyrics here:
