Bit of everything
Few bands can claim to still be going strong after 25 years and still manage to keep a passionate and active fan base, but Marillion are one of those bands. With the imminent release of their thirteenth studio album this year (over 13,000 of which have been bought beforehand by ardent fans) there's no denying that Marillion are here to stay for a while yet.
Given the variety of progressive rock music that Marillion produces in the four studio albums from the Fish era, it would be difficult if not impossible to put together a truly representive sample on a single CD, but in some ways this compilation manages to cram in a bit of everything. By concentrating (mostly) on single releases and b-sides, this album squeezes in a collection that skims the surface and offers a tantalising glimpse beneath it, rather than providing an exhaustive collection.
Marillion's music is always best sampled in an album-sized meal rather than single-sized chunks (especially in the case of the stunning third album), but nevertheless the quality of musicianship still shines through. However, to really appreciate Marillion during this era, start with Misplaced Childhood.
