Customer Reviews
An album to get a lot out of.
I becasme interesting in Orange Juice after hearing 'Rip It Up' on the radio. I really did like that single so i thought i'd buy this 'best of' compilation as a way of delving straight into Orange Juice's portfolio...i was not dissapointed.
I found this is an album that requires a lot of listening to discover how good it really is. It was not an instant 'all these tracks are good' and in my opionion, this is a good thing because you don't get bored quickly. After listening through the album a few times i began to realize how good the majority of tracks are.
There are a mixture of fun, ever changing tracks such as 'falling and laughing', 'the day i went down to texas' and 'salmon fishing in new york' and contrasting slow paced, soulful and somewhat 'soppy' tracks such as 'a place in my heart' and 'scaremonger' Both styles are performed brilliantly by the band, with Collins using his voice (and guitar) to great effect. All in all, the album is quite sophisticated lyrically, vocally and instrumentally - it really is british pop at it's best.
My favourite tracks are 'lean period', 'falling and laughing', 'a place in my heart', 'rip it up' and 'i guess i'm just too sensitive' The reason i've given the album 4 stars is although i do love and enjoy the majority of tracks, there are no tracks which I 'absolutely love' and could add to my list of 'favourite tracks in the world' which is a shame because Orange Juice, in my eyes, were capable of a few incredibly brilliant tracks.
As a final conclusion then, this album is very good and i'm still listening to it a week after purchasing it. It has got to a stage where i have a lot of the tracks stuck in my head (this is a good thing). If you like soulful or fun 80's pop then you can't discount this album. If you like anything by The Smiths or The Style Council, you will also warm to Orange Juice. Top stuff.
pop fans - you NEED this album
Due to the oh-so-quick deletion of the band's 1998 Polydor reissues, this compilation will have to suffice for those of you wishing to sample some of the most inventive and brilliant music of the early 80's. And a good compilation it is too .. with all the singles (including there sole hit, "Rip It Up") along with a smattering of b-sides and album tracks. Edwyn Collin's lyrics of teen angst and romantic whimsey are brilliant - like those which a certain Stephen Morrissey would become famous for a few years later. Your pop collection is incomplete without this album.
