Rea play's it safe.........
This is not the greatest of Rea CD's but its also not the worst either. The opening track and lead off single "Nothing to fear" is the real highlight, a smouldering slowbuilder with some fantastic guitar playing and "atmosphere", the lyrics are amazingly insightful and years ahead of there time taking into account the events since nine eleven. Track 2 "Miles is a cigarette" seems to be a forerunner of the more recent "mellow blues" sound that Rea built upon 13 years later with the "Blue Jukebox" Jazzeeblue CD.
"God's Great Banana Skin" is classic Rea pop with a catchy chorus and melody. The rest is fairly standard fair with some nice melodies and muscianship but nothing above the average.
I feel that after the major success of his 80's L.P.s it sounds as if he was running out of idea's, and maybe record company commitment, and it was only until after his serious illness in the early part of the 21st century does Rea seem to get back to doing something that he appears to really care about with his "Stoney Road" project.
However, this is a decent enough CD and one you should not be fearful of having in your collection, but it is Rea, apart from 2/3 tracks, in third gear.
a great album
This Chris Rea album starts with the top 20 single, Nothing to fear. It is a long song , maybe too long, but some great guitar work. the next song is Miles is a cigarette. This is avery bluesy, jazzy song, but don't be put off if you don't instantly like it it took me a few playings to appreciate the chord sequence and lyrics.
The nest song up is the title track. This catchy song only reached no. 31 ( the album hit no.4 ) but is one of the best songs on the album.
For me 90's blues is the weakest track, but is by no means unlistenable.
Too much pride and Boom Boom are fairly average songs. Then comes the real cream of the album. I ain't the fool here is a very catchy, though slow with words that ring true. There she goes ( nothing like the La's classic ) is a beautiful love song something that Rea manages to get on every album. I'm ready is a standout track- very lively and rea at his best. Black dog is average, before the closing Soft top,Hard shoulder used in the film of the same name. Its a great end to this much underated album. As with all his music i found the music not so good to start with, the only real song that grabbed me was I'm ready, but many playings later, i wouldn't be without this album.
Fantastically mellow
This album is the type of mellow and relaxing music that befits a late evening, when you want to relax and chill out and forget everything. Chris Rea at his best!
