Vintage Runrig
Although not representative of the mind-blowing sound of Runrig today, this album is a good retrospective of the sound of Runrig from their early days in the 70s until the resignation of singer Donnie Munro in 1997.
The 80s and 90s anthemic classics "Alba", "Protect and Survive", "Hearthammer" and the first (and only) Gaelic song to get into the UK Top 20 "An Ubhal as Airde" are included here. Although at times the production sounds slightly dated, the sheer quality of the songs always shines through.
Runrig in 2008 are a vastly different (and in my opinion far superior) band to the sound on this CD, but the songs on this CD still beat hands down all their contemporaries of the time.
An excellent collection and good introduction to the sound of "old" Runrig.
So dated!
Sorry but I bought this CD as it was cheap and I thought it would be good to experiment. As soon as I put it on I knew I had made a mistake. Frankly the sound is too dated and I don't think the songs are that strong. I'm sure many runrig fans will not agree with me. It doesn't have an authentic celtic feel; it sounds rather like Clannad meets Chris De Burgh! It reminds me of some of my old Wolfstone CD's which I hardly ever play any more. I'm already thinking of taking it to the second hand shop. If you are not a big fan then steer clear.
An outstanding collection
Long Distance was one of my very first Runrig CD's, they are oustanding performers and this album reflects on some of their finer work for that era.
Runrig use a mixture of traditional scottish and modern rock instruments to produce an amzing sound that has all in attendance jumping around.
Long Distance was one of the first of many Runrig CD's but I can honestly say that no other band/artist in my lifetime has given me so much pleasure.
My only regret is that I only discovered the band in my late 20's, I wish I had discovered them a lot sooner.
