Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
Take the sweet soul vocals of Caron Wheeler. Add jazzy hip-hop beats and early Balearic rhythms. Mix with one of the most influential producers of the decade, Nellee Hooper, and pour through the musical uber-talent of Jazzie B. The result is Soul II Soul's seminal sound. Soul II Soul Vol 4 - the Classic Singles 1988-1993 is a greatest-hits album that contains "Keep On Movin'" and the phenomenal "Back To Life". This is exceptional and innovative music whose rough edge keeps it fresh. --Ed Potton
CD Description
British producer Jazzie B. teamed up with fellow record maker Nellee Hooper and together they created the group Soul IISoul. The group quickly found themselves churning out hit records, first for the U.K. dance floor and later for the world, thanks largely to the ubiquitous 1989 hit "Back to Life". VOLUME IV - THE CLASSIC SINGLES 88-93 could rightly be called their most essential package, as singles were certainly the outfit's strong suit. Soul II Soul was aided greatly on a number of songs--including "Back to Life", "Keep on Movin,'" and the early hit "Fairplay"--by the hypnotic smoothed-out vocals of singer Caron Wheeler, whose departure after the first album ensured that the group's debut would also be their commercial peak. A critical and commercial success at a time when a new brand of underground black club music was making its way onto mainstream radio, this collection provides cultural relevance while retaining its stellar pop appeal.

Afro genious
This is the first (and only so far) compilation album by Soul II Soul covering their amazing career from 1989's Club Classics to 1990's A New Decade and 1992's Just Right. It takes off with the smash hit (no introductions needed)"Back To Life" which is still regarded one of the best R&B records ever. The more mellow "Keep On Moving" is next followed by the sophisticated rap of "Get A Life" and the haunting melodies of "A Dream's A Dream".It's pure soul on "Missing You" , "Move Me No Mountain"(the weakest track in the album) and "Just Right" before it gets a bit more clubby with "People".Soul II Soul's first record ever "Fairplay" probably invented mainstream 90's R&B and the only new track on the album "Wish" is yet another winner. The album ends with the latest Soul II Soul Top 5 hit "Joy".All in all,the album certifies Jazzie B. for what he really is:a R&B/soul genious and while his music has lost its commercial appeal it certainly keeps getting better and better
