Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
This is an early collection that gathers the group's hits up to 1975. While they continued to make the charts (albeit sporadically) for another decade, the Stylistics' golden years had drawn to a close by the time this record hit the stands, so almost all of their key tracks are here. Best of the Stylistics Vol. 2 and All-Time Classics cover different bases, while Greatest Love Hits is a theme compilation with some overlap. Yet another compilation, Very Best of the Stylistics, largely has the same material as the Best of... package. For an exhaustive selection of the group's best work, you'll have to go to the original albums. Top picks: The Stylistics, Round 2, and Let's Put It All Together. --Gavin McNett
Customer Reviews
Superb - see them live as well
I saw the Stylistics in Northampton last night (Nov 07).
39 years after forming they are still a truly class act.
Buy this album and see them live if you ever get the chance.
As close to Soul Perfection as you can get.
Definitive British hits collection
The Stylistics were one of the most successful soul groups of the mid-seventies, having a string of major hits on both sides of the Atlantic. Their lead singer, Russell Thomkins, had a very distinctive falsetto voice ensuring that a Stylistics record is immediately recognizable as such.
The Stylistics initially worked with Thom Bell as their producer. Between 1971 and 1974, they had nine straight top forty hits in America. During this period, they had six British hits, three of which made the top ten. Their last and biggest hit with Thom Bell as producer was You make me feel brand new, which peaked at number two in both Britain and America. Among their other hits in both countries during this period were Betcha by golly wow, I'm stone in love with you and Rocking roll baby.
After the huge success of You make me feel brand new, Van McCoy took over as producer. Their American fortunes took a dive but maintained their run of success in Britain until 1976 - indeed, they had even more success with Van McCoy than they had with Thom Bell. They had a UK number one with Can't give you anything but my love, while Let's put it all together, Sing baby sing, Na na is the saddest word, Can't help falling in love (previously a UK number one hit for Elvis Presley in 1962 and a top three UK hit for Andy Williams in 1970), Funky weekend and Sixteen bars all made the UK top ten.
This compilation includes all their British singles hits as well as the lead track of an EP that made the UK singles chart. It doesn't include any of their American hits that failed to chart in the UK, such as You are everything, but that won't matter to the vast majority of Brits for whom this compilation was created.
Excellent
I first owned "The Best of" on vinyl when I was a teenager!! To own it again now on CD is a joy as it still sounds as good today as it did then. "I'm Stone in Love With You", "You Make Me Feel Brand New", "Sing Baby Sing" and "Sixteen Bars" (to name a few )demonstrates the sheer vocal excellence of the Stylistics. If you like their music then you will not be disappointed by this superb collection.
