Amazon.co.uk Review
Multi-culti Los Angeles-based 10-piece Ozomatli is more than the sum of their parts: hip-hop, salsa, and funk crash head-on in this surprisingly natural collaboration. Their self-titled debut makes Ozomatli sound like one of the world's great live shows--a party band with a brain--and they pull it off deftly. Rapper Chali 2na has an authoritative voice and a way with words, mixing references from Edie Brickell to Ed McMahon; just he and the Cut Chemist (both of Jurassic 5), who lends his turntable skills to the proceedings, would make for an entertaining album. But it's the way that the two--when they're even featured--build on and blend into the grooves of the wah-pedal-and-brass-section-powered ensemble that sets Ozomatli apart. Danceable and engaging, they've made a stellar debut. --Randy Silver

Sit up and listen!5
I first heard this album at uni in about 1999 - i was chilling out in my mates room when i heard the intro to 'Super Bowl Sundae' start playing. I was listening to this and just relaxing and then, BANG, the track transforms into the jazziest, funkiest slab of hip-hop you'll ever hear. I instantly fell in love with that song and, after a further 20 minutes, pretty much the entire album!

This truly is an incredible collection of tracks - there's not a bad song on there and, if you haven't got this album, you need it. If you have got it, buy it again - it's THAT good!

Refreshingly different5
My first experience of Ozomatli was when a friend of mine played me a track from a compilation he made. I never looked back!
Luckily, they were playing near me not long after i'd heard them, and their live shows, as i'm sure anyone who's seen them will testify, is an absolutely awesome experience!

The blend of styles they fuse is incredible, latin, funk, jazz, hip-hop, dance...its truly wonderful and so refreshing.
They genuinely love what they do and that comes across.
It helps that they're all absolutely awesome musicians too!

Badass California melting pot funk5
In tradition of LA bands WAR and Fishbone and Cyprus Hill, Latino funk plus hip hop and a bit of Afro-pop and flamenco and ska and reggae but somehow managing to make it all seamless. Ozomatli are famed for live shows but the CD is a must-have for anyone searching for forward-looking funky sounds. This CD is guaranteed not to sound like anything else in your collection. Check out the beautiful vocal melodies in Eva and the grooves everywhere else. DJ on all tracks, Spanish salsa grooves and vocals on others. No shtick, just move-your-ass cool music for hipsters. Apparently the band have a cult following in San Francisco for their live shows.
