Editorial Reviews

In the late 1990s so many rappers are appearing on each other's records that it becomes easy to forget just whose album it is. On El Niño, Keith Murray, Erick Sermon, and Redman--all lethal MCs--took the next logical step and joined forces. The result? Chemistry class is in session. What cannot be understated is how reenergized the trio sound together. They appear invigorated with a sense of focus and duty: "Full Cooperation" is pure park-after-dark rhyming; "The Game" is the trio at its freshest, freely trading four bars each over classic cuts, breaks, and beats; and then there's "Ride wit Us," with one of the most surreal exchanges on the album, when guest rapper Too Short passes the mic to Murray over a Sermon beat. Juice Crew veteran Biz Markie also adds some old-school spice to a cover of "Rhymin' with Biz" that pairs the original hook with James Brown's "Payback" guitar. --Todd Inoue

DEF SQUAD DO IT AGAIN
This one here is for the true funk followers. If you like any of the threes extensive solo efforts then you are sure to love this album. The three that compromise Def Squad are ofcourse, Erick Sermon whose beats have been inspirational in hip hop for over a decade having 3 solo albums and more with Epmd; Redman whose comical lyrics and amazingly diverse flows puts him at the forefront of hip hops top mcs. Himself with four solo albums two more with Method Man and appeearing on every other remix out there!! Keith Murray is the final member his style begs you to pick up a dictionary and wonder how Keith managed to fit all those lyrics into one verse?? Again with four solo efforts and numerous guest appearances he is no stranger to the scene. The album has the makings of a classic before you even play the first tune.
El nino hits you off hard from the start. "Check n me out" comes with a sweet bass guitar riff looped up and Erick Sermon tellin you hes "worth 65 mics" which is believeable from this and previous outings. You should all know track 4 if you are a hip hop lover. Full cooperation was a hit everywhere in the summer of 98 another track with excellent lyrics and beats. This album takes you to the east west and southern coast of America with its diverse styles. Track 5 Ride wit us features Bay Rapper Too Short is is different to most of the album with laid back b-line that just rolls over the sharp snares and with all rappers adopting a more laid back style yet finishing with the same force of their other tracks. The album also has guest apperances by rappers Lil Jamal and the undeniable Biz Markie. There are so many other tracks that deserve mentioning but a couple of my favorite are yall ni**as aint ready, no guest list and Say word. Their remake of sugar hill gangs "rappers delight", Def Squad Delite is a nice way to finish the album too.
The only reason it got four stars from me is all of the Def Squad have and continue to produce even better stuff. However if you dont own it already ask yourself why not. Classic Material, a must have if you are into hip hop.
