Customer Reviews

very early Roxette3
You can hear the difference here from the more polished sound on later albums. Marie's voice is very youthful sounded and she really strains to hit some of the higher notes. Lots of the tunes have promise, but are overdone by her voice. Take 'so far away' here. Horrible and out of tune. Take it on 'tourism'. A beautiful track given the right arrangement. Per sings a lot more here and seems to trade turns singing lead with Marie. He also seems to sing in the lower register of his voice, as if to accomodate Marie's voice a tone higher. I find 'Soul deep' irritating at best, and 'joy of a toy' as bad as the song title. The one song I think shows signs of maturity and has a nice arrangement and vocal is 'call of the wild'. Marie sings in the softer tone that would be perfected on the next album. Per handles the lead vocal well. There are also numerous bonus tracks here. Three are worhwhile, as they are b-sides and an a-side, not on the album. However, 'turn to me' really shows Marie straining to sing the higher notes.
An interesting album, but for completists only.

19864
1986 was the year that Roxette broke through with their 1st big hit 'Neverending Love'.....in Sweden anyway. The rest of the world had to wait until 1988 and the 'Look Sharp!' album.
This however their very 1st album is a mixed bag of pop songs and ballads. It sounds a bit experimental but i think that's probably what made it sound as good as it does for an 80's synth pop album.it doesn't always work i never did and still don't like 'Surrender' but i like all the other tracks in some way.The upbeat numbers are the best but the trademark ballads are on good form here too even at this early stage in their career.A GREAT ALBUM

How 80s pop should sound5
Let's get to the point; this is an outstanding 80s pop album, comfortably exceeding all of Roxette's later work. It has the Roxette trademarks of soaring tunes, harmonies and rhythm. However, what marks it out are the excellent 80s production values which make the whole album soft on the ear by ensuring each track receives deft strokes of the engineer's brush. It therefore has great subtlety (which is often lacking on later Roxette works) which help each track to provide hidden depths with repeated listening. The songwriting is consistently good (a Roxette trait if ever there was one) - Joy of a Toy, Neverending Love and I Call Your Name are all great rock/pop tracks. The standout is Call of the Wild which has such emotional depth that it ranks with It Must Have Been Love (an extra on the album).

If you are a Roxette fan you should definitely buy this. If you are an 80s pop fan then you have even more reason. It won't let you down.
