David Gates - First
This was his first and in my book his best solo album (though all six have been great!). There is music of unbelievable quality in this album - from the poignant and beautiful "Ann" which has you close to tears, through "do you believe he's comin'" which is another terrific soft rock classic, to the jewel in the crown - 8 mins 52 seconds of pure unadulterated heaven - the clouds and rain suite. I have worn out 2 vinyl copies and 2 tape copies of this album, and I still play it at least once a week!
Perfect
Think 1973, close your eyes and remember when songwriters knew not only how to write a melody, but were great at lyrics too. And great singers. This is a feast for the ears.
Nice sound quality. Acoustic guitars on some tracks and synths with Gates' great bass playing on others. It all adds up to an album that never fils to give me pleasure, no matter how many hundreds of times I listen to it.
Wonderful
I'd been trying to find a copy of this CD for years - and Amazon had it all the time. Brought back wonderful memories of the times and I'd have probably paid the asking price for one track. Suite: Clouds and Rain. I first heard this when Kenny Everett played it on the radio. I find it an incredibly moving and emotional song that still makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. Gates pure voice, a poignant story line and powerful backing - it never fails to move me. The rest of the CD is excellent, but it can't compare to the Clouds & Rain Suite.
I've bought the other David Gates solo CD's - and to be honest, they are OK, but nothing special. If you are going to buy one David Gates CD, buy this one.
