A virtually forgotten band and album
This was released at the back end of the 1980s amidst a whirlpool of synth-pop and Stock, Aitken, Waterman pap. It gained a certain amount of credibility at the time but, unfortunately, the band and this excellent debut album have been almost forgotten. Hailing from Liverpool, this basic three-piece with added brass section produced a kind of poppy soul with strong Motown influences, particularly on tracks such as the impressive, foot tapping "Hooverville", with its great drum/vocal ending section. Listening back today, one realises just what a mighty single "Ideal World" was, a simultaneously bold and catchy anti-racist anthem. It also has a superb bass fade-out. "Forgotten Town" and "When The Fingers Point" are also soulful yet instantly singalong at the same time, while continuing to carry a "message" in the lyrics. "Born Again" is of the same mould.
I had forgotten just what a good album this was. Maybe it is a little bit dated and sounds a little bit as an album of its time, but it is worth a listen, being lyrically, musically and stylistically very strong. Whatever happened to The Christians I am not sure, one more album release and that was it, I'm afraid.
Loved it then, love it now
I have to say that there is about 15 years between hearing it then and now and yet it's aged so well. Both this album and Colour have that something special that can take you back to the place and the time when you heard one track for the first time. I love it, but I'm not a music critic!
Amazing debut from the Christians.
I heard The Christians during my first visit to the U.K. in 1988. I was blown away by this great song I kept hearing..
The song was "Ideal world". I bought the vinyl on the spot. I can tell the rest of the (now) cd is incredible. It's difficult to pinpoint their style. I guess we could call it modern pop-soul. No matter, music like is hard to find these days. This cd does not sound dated at all. Henry Preistman's soft voice and Russell Christian's sweet guitar souds should have you hooked right from the first song "Forgotten Town". Most songs deal with real topics while looking at the bright side of life. Best known (at least in North America) for two later hits "Words" and "The Bottle", this debut is their best! Very uplifting music.
