In as crowded a field as late-'90s R&B, you've got to have something that makes you stand out from the pack if you wantto make a name for yourself. On ONE WISH, Deborah Cox makesit plain that she's addressed this issue with little difficulty. Not that Cox offers us some bold redefinition of her chosen genre; the songs on ONE WISH address the timeless topic of romance almost exclusively, and the production is on par with that of most other R&B acts. What sets Cox apart is that indefinable quality all great singers possess; a combination of emotional commitment, technical facility and pure inspiration. ONE WISH is full of wistful ballads laced with florid acoustic guitar filigrees and gentle string synth washes. Over this delicate backdrop, Cox lays her smooth but communicative voice, making every song seem like an intimate conversation.

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
Deborah Cox's self-titled debut made waves back in 1995, but perhaps not enough to prepare her for a much more crowded (and cutthroat) playing field this time around. As much as you want to applaud her for sticking to her soul on One Wish, you can't help longing for a pop crossover hit like "Sentimental" and "Who Do U Love?" The first single, "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here", is a disappointing attempt, but "September" and the title track--which ups the ante on the funk--step up to the challenge. Naughty by Nature's Kay-Gee helms the boards on the Next-flavored ballad, "It's Over Now", and R.L. of Next cameos on "We Can't Be Friends", a classic-style duet that has all the ingredients for a melodic masterpiece. --Rebecca Wallwork
Customer Reviews
Way up there with Whitney & Mariah
If you are into vocals, buy this album. Deborah Cox has an awesome voice, full of power. She has duetted with Whitney Housten and didn't get upstaged once! Yes buy it for the ballads, and not if you are into Hip/Hop RnB as this is not what you get. You will get what Deborah Cox is all about...a stunning vocal, to close your eyes to.
The best voice ever !
Deborah Cox seems to like ballads and most of this album shows this BUT because she has one of the best voices it comes across as a very good album. If you like love songs and ballads then this is your thing BUT this album also features some brilliant upbeat tracks like 'September', 'Its over now' 'One wish' and 'Things just aint the same '. This album should feature in everyones collection and Deborah deserves to receive more recognition than she does. Look out for this lady in the future as im sure she will be massive !
Nice voice, Shame about the tempo!
You may have never heard of Deborah Cox but the girl can sing. If you want strictly ballads, this is the album for You. However, if you like your hip-hop as well You might want to direct your cash elsewhere. The bumpin' tracks are September, It's Over and One Wish. All three are greatly infectious tracks, but the rest of the album consists of soft-hitting ballads. The standout ballads are We Can't be Friends and Nobody's supposd To Be Here. Boring overall.
