Simply Brilliant
Often forgotten and surely the most underrated of DM's singles. Everyone of the three tracks on this CD Single is a classic. Only When I Lose Myself is a beautiful song, full of great hooks and strings to die for. Surrender is a track that deserved a place on an album (Martin should have kept it for Exciter), "I'm a man of flesh and bone", gorgeous. Headstar is a great little instrumental which many might recognise from the credits to the 86-98 DVD.
Five stars. No sweat.
Loose Yourself In Depeche Mode
Interesting single from the boys from Basildon.
This string inspired single is yet another dark offering from DM,although, "Only When I loose Myself" is nothing like anyone who follows the band will have expected.
The listener can be drawn into reading to much into this song, lines such as "Did I have to sell my soul for pleasure like this", if you look closer into the song you will see that this song is more about the uncontrollable feelings felt by a person when they fall in love. Gore explores this idea within the lyrics, the good feelings and the bad feelings we feel within ourselves and as usual you get the blatentlty truthful, "Something beautiful is happening inside foor me" and the downright ironic, "Did I need to place my heart in the palm of your hand before I could even start to understand".
However this works well within the song and the lyrics, coupled with Gahan's haunting vocals on this track, you are drawn in to the dark world of Depeche Mode.
There is no doubt that this single is a step up, musically for DM, the strings used in this music really make the single what it is, chilling, dark and haunting.
No doubt the writing of this song made DM find themselves, I can't imagine that they wrote this song without doing so.
Although this is quite a trying song if you don't like dark music, the lyrics breathe fire and urgency in to the song and "Only When I Loose Myself" demands for you to sit up and take notice!.
Well worthing buying, if only to listen to the string instrumental parts.
