A classic recording
Kovacevich and conductor Sir Colin Davis established a very successful partnership with a series of concerto recordings in the late '60s and into the '70s. Their recordings of the Beethoven concertos, in particular, have won many plaudits. This disc was awarded one of the Penguin Guide's coveted rosettes, and it's not hard to understand why. The first movement is by turns majestic, spirited and playful. The slow movement is sublime - I have not heard any other recording that quite matches the feeling of gentle introspection that Kovacevich achieves. Rounding it off is a finale full of Beethovenian swagger. The sound might not be quite up to the best modern standards, but it is more than acceptable. The coupling is an outstanding account of one of Beethoven's finest piano sonatas. Highly recommended.

Kovacevich's Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto
This is a very fine performance. I like the fact that Davis makes it grand and exciting. Kovacevich, one of the finest Beethoven pianists plays it in a really joyful way. This performance makes me feel happy. Because the concerto is called the "Emperor" concerto, I get the impression that people are happy and proud of becoming an emperor so they can rule a state.

An excellent quality recording of a superb piece of music - Kovecevich is outstanding. An absolute bargain at this price.
