Snap, crackle, and guitar pop with a title that says it all. --Jeff Bateman
CD Description
Starring the same cast of characters who helped him sculpt previous works--guitarists Richard Lloyd (Television) and Robert Quine (Richard Hell & The Voidoids) along with Velvet Crush drummer Ric Menck--100% FUN brims with the power-pop hooks that Matthew Sweet has become known for.
Helmed by uber-producer Brendan O'Brien, the album retains Sweet's veiled cynicism, whether it's the self-loathing of "Sick Of Myself" or the feeling of abandonment in "Walk Out", a song whosepoint is point driven by O'Brien's insistent harpsichord playing. Sweet's desperation culminates in the semi-delusionalvibe ebbing from "Lost My Mind": while Menck plays a constant militaristic cadence, Quine and Lloyd riff in and out of the song and O'Brien's mellotron pulses and oozes in a vortex that has Sweet's voice ebbing in and out of a fog.
While the scenery around this part of Sweet's psyche may seem familiar, the tight production and crack playing groove enoughto shed some light on this darker side of town.

The title says it all!
I remember picking up the Japanese import of this way back in 1995. That edition (if you can find it) includes a very funky manga comic, staring Matthew, and two extra Moogtastic tracks; 'Sense of adventure' and 'Slowly'. As the cover of that version states 16.6% extra fun!
This is quality stuff and easily ranks up there with other Matthew Sweet greats "Girlfriend" and "In Reverse".
The opening tracks are just brilliant. The alternate gutar-men; Robert Quine and Richard Lloyd are (as they were on both "Girlfrind" and "Altered Beast") simply awesome. The real touch of genius is the multi-channel duel between the two guitarists on 'Lost my mind'. I should add that Ric Menck's drums are a major plus on this record. Brendan O'Brien's contribution, on piano, clavinet and mellotron, in addition to production, is also significant.
Other stand out tracks include 'We're the same', which is just so poptastic, 'Giving it back', which has some soaring guitar parts. 'Come to love', 'Almost forgot' and 'Smog moon' as hit high points. For me it's 'Get older' that really stands out. This is a rare thing - a record where quality abounds in every track.
If this album doesn't have you reaching for your air guitar then nothing will.
buy it for the 1st 3 songs
This isn't Sweets strongest set of songs but does contain 3 of sweets best songs in his career.
as a sweet fan, You needs to have - sick of myself - probably my favourtie sweet song - i read one review by someone for his album 'girlfriend' which stated that his work after altered beast was simply grinding crashing chords - and yes what is wrong with that?
"Sick of myself" and "Were the same" have some of the best gnarling guitars complete with nice hooks and guitar licks alongside fabulous lyrics about mind manipulation and regretting losing someone you loved for the wrong reasons - all of this with glorious sing a long choruses and great harmonies.
The rest of the album is mediocre, some songs are worth listening to a few times - but the 3 opening songs and the 2 mentioned before are worth buying this alone.
If you are wondering where to start a Matthew Sweet collection - you wouldn't do bad to start here as you will have 3 quality songs to get used to - but there are stronger sets of songs out there.
