Rory's Swansong
This album was Rory's last and it returned him to the approach that he took with his classic, Tattoo, Irish Tour Band albeit with and expanded band supported by horns. Lou Martin makes a welcome appearance and there are some wonderful moments. This album, in my opinion, is worth 5 stars for Alexis alone, Rory's tribute to Alexis Korner, the man who turned Britain on to the blues and therefore the rest of the world, including America! This was Rory with a renewed musical focus so, apart from the obvious human tragedy, this serves as an added reminder that, had he lived, he had so much more to offer, I will always miss him, he was a one off.
Not up with his best, but worth buying
For my money, this is among the best of Rory's later stuff. Apart from the familiar guitar-led blues-rock & unmistakable vocals, there's a bit more variety here than on many of his post-Tattoo albums. Sax, trumpet, keyboards and harmonica are all in the mix, and there's a couple of good instrumentals.
STUNNING IN ITS ENERGY, BEAUTY AND RANGE
I first received a copy of this from a friend of mine in L.A., 4/5 years ago and found myself blown away form the first few bars. Having seen Rory twice with Taste & once after, in the '70's, this album proved to me that he could still deliver the goods!!Slow, soulful tracks;stonking rockers & mid-pace bluesy, rootsy rock are all here. His gravelly vocals, rolling beats, very skillful slide guitar pieces make this one his best for me if I compare it against 'Top Priority','Jinxed','Taste Live at the Isle of Wight' & 'Live in Europe'. I would not hesitate to recommend this as a superb intro to his work.
P.S.Eventually I bought the cd this year in Dublin where ,fittngly enough, there is a street named after this legend of Irish contemporary music.
