This is not a compilation
Although the title suggets otherwise, this is not a compilation CD. It's the third album from the band, with new material and recorded live. The title refers to the fact that much of the songs are older, as you can check out by buying their compilation of early material 'Preserves/uncanned'. These are the strawbs at their transition from a folk band to folk rock, and this cd should please fans of this style. Indeed, this is the one of the two records the band made with keyboardist Rick Wakeman, and the only one that features a composition of his, that is, for me, maybe his best. Strawbs and David Cousins'fans shouldn't miss his epic 'The antiques suite', as well as rare bonus tracks like 'Forever'
One of the Strawbs' grandest efforts
This, besides being a great album in its own right, also captures the Strawbs in an interesting, transitional phase between the folk rock style of the early Strawbs to the progressive rock of their releases in the 70s. It is the first album to include keyboard virtuoso Rick Wakeman, and is the root to his notoriety (his improvised piece "Temperament of Mind" stunned both audience and music critics at the time). Wakeman would later quit the Strawbs in favour of progressive wankers Yes. The highlight for me on this album is "Song of a Sad Little Girl", which is one of Dave Cousins' most beautiful melodies. The lyric tells of Cousins daughter having the flu, but in a most superb fashion. One of the Strawbs absolute best songs. The remastered CD also includes the single "Forever".
