Barely scratched the surface....1
Tina Arena's debut hit 'Chains' was always going to be a difficult act to follow, in part because it was such a powerful and memorable song and also because power ballads can only be handled in small doses by the main stream. We're talking about an industry that was, at the time of this album's release, saturated with big voices who can sing big songs- Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. Arena was a small fish swimming with big sharks and I feel her approach to the mood, style, and production of this album was weak and uninspired.

So Arena, can sing, there's no doubt about that, but an album full of vain efforts to reassert that fact was unnecessary. 'In Deep' churns out one love song after another, with indistinguishable lyrics, unmemorable melodies, and a pretty dull, uniform tempo throughout. 'Now I Can Dance' is the only up-tempo attempt and even that was uninspired and hardly engaging. Her 'Mask of Zorro' duet with Marc Anthony, titled 'I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You' is driven mainly by the presence of her singing partner and his passionate vocals rather than her own. My favorite of the whole bad lot is 'Sixteen Years', an hommage to Arena's vocal abilities in 'Chains' combined with attitude and real feeling in her singing- something the rest of the songs on this album lack.

If you want to make diva music, remember that it's not just the voice but the passion in the singing that carries these songs over to the listener. The majority of this diva's album was emotionally dry and uninspired- you were never touched 'in deep'- in fact, the music barely scratched the surface.

Joe, I AM the music man!!!5
A Good voice isn’t the key to success in this shallow world, unfortunately. But Tina Arena has it all, A fabulous voice, she’s gorgeous and she writes fantastic songs. But where is her credit?

I bought this album on the strength of "Don't Ask" which in itself is a fantastic album. Sometimes I brace myself for a second or third album disappointment. Except this time I wasn't let down. This album is in my opinion one of the best ever recorded and I have over 800 to choose from.

Each track flows perfectly from one to another, but stand out on their own. There are many highlights, my favourites being "Now I Can Dance", "In Command", "Sixteen Years", "If I Didn't Love You", Unsung Hero", “No Shame” and "Flashback". If you want to buy this, look for the UK release, it has the extra tracks of "I Want To Know What Love Is", I Want To Spend My Lifetime Loving You" and "Whistle Down The Wind". (The latter worth buying the album on it's own).

Musically this album is very catchy, you will be singing along in no time. But lyrically, it is also very personal. There is something here to represent most experiences from any point of view.

I recently grabbed this CD out of my collection to take in the car on a seven hour journey to Scotland with some friends. We ended up listening to this one CD the whole journey on repeat, by the request of my friends!

I have one word to say about this album. Phenomenal.

wasted talent1
Tina Arena has a beautiful voice, which she fails to make the most of on this album. Every song finishes in a screech. Even the presence of Marc Anthony fails to redeem this album.
