The Spice Girls cover "Christmas Wrapping" by the Waitresses4
I have been listening to the original version of "Christmas Wrapping" by the Waitresses, which led to my being directed to this 1999 cover of the song by the Spice Girls. The pace of the song is sped up a bit, there are a few changes to the lyrics (mostly early in the song), and some techno elements are added to the musical mix. I prefer the original, but this is a decent enough cut and since it had been almost two decades since the song was first heard it is not surprising that an entire generation of listeners do not make the connection. However, this cover version is helping to slowly but surely wean me from listening to the original over and over and over again (now I can alternate between the two).

This CD-Single also has two versions of "Goodbye," the best track from the Spice Girl's third and apparently final album, the ironically entitled "Forever." Since this was the group's first single after Geri Halliwell left the group and the chorus was all about "Goodbye, my friend, it's not the end," the song is spared from any false sense of irony and the split was clearly more amicable than, oh, say John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The radio edit of "Goodbye" is a bit better than the orchestral mix, but that is going to be a matter of taste. The song only made it to #11 on The Billboard Hot 100 chart (but #1 in Canada), but I would blame that on the three year delay between albums rather than on

Be aware that you can get both "Christmas Wrapping" and the basic version of "Goodbye" on several different CD-singles. Apparently "Goodbye" was originally released as a Christmas single, a phenomenon in the U.K. that I have a much greater appreciation for after watching "Love Actually."

The Girls said 'Goodbye' to Geri and moved on.....5
After Geri Halliwell's shock departure of the Spice Girls in June 1998, the remaining 4 Spice Girls decided that there was no way they could replace her so moved forward and in December 1998 they said 'Goodbye' to Geri and decided it was time to grow up.

This inspiring ballad shot straight to number 1 spending 1 week at the summit. After the track fell out of the chart 8 weeks later, it re-entered the top 40 twice, the first being in March at 37 and again 5 months after original release in May 1999 at number 34.

A beautiful ballad but it was becoming clear, the band had to change direction before their already faltering fan base fell to pieces.

REAL GEM IT IS!!!5
I recently received this merchandise from amazon.co.uk and it was very good, as a single. It might be a little misleading as the only tracks in it are the two version of Goodbye and Christmas Wrapping, but it's still a good christmas present to us SPICE fans. The cover was superb and the quality is great!

You should really add this to your collection if you still haven't got one! SPICE GIRLS RULE!!!
