CD Description
On their second outing, ARE A DRAG, Me First & the Gimme Gimmes up the wackiness quotient by presenting a set of songs made famous on the stage and silver screen, often by female singers--hence the album's cheeky title and cross-dressing cover photo. Featuring vocalist Spike Slawson (Swingin' Utters), bassist Fat Mike (NOFX), and other Californian punk-pop nobility, the 1999 record includes a raucous take on "Over the Rainbow" (from THE WIZARD OF OZ) and a fast-paced rendition of "Favorite Things" (from THE SOUND OF MUSIC), resultingin a record that's ultimately even more fun than the Gimme Gimmes' first album, HAVE A BALL.

funny
i luv this group, they are made up of chris shiflett (AKA Jake Jackson) presently of the foo fighters (and formely of no use for a name and 22 jacks)on guitar, fat mike from NOFX on bass, Lagwagon singer/guitarist Joey Cape, Lagwagon drummer Dave Raun and singer Spike Slawson. They first began appearing on punk compilations and after releasing songs named after the artist they covered they eventually got round to releasing a full length record in late 1997, called "have a ball" songs on this included covers of 'leaving on a jet plane', 'uptown girl' and 'seasons in the sun' (note the connection with westlife ....) and this record, "are a drag" is the much anticipated (well by me anyway!) second album by an amazing punk band who seem to have a unique ability to convert a song into a great punk tune that anyone wants to listen to! I am frequently lending my me first cds to friends who listen to pop music and having them retured with a smile and people telling me they have recorded it or are off to buy themselves a copy!! so if this brilliant record is anything to go by, the next album will be great! so buy this album now, i garantee u will not regret it, and if you do you can give me the cd! hehehehe!
gimme some more!
MFATGG are a punk covers supergroup, made up of memebers of no use for a name, lagwagon, nofx and the foo fighters.
This was their second release and saw them embracing their favourite broadway tunes, turning them into short punk masterpieces of humour and classic punk ideology.
Amongst the best on the album are 'over the rainbow', 'science fiction double feature' and 'tomorrow' (from Annie). This is an album that glistens with humour and bubbles with energy, an essential for any fan of punk, comedy covers or any of the bands above. The gimme gimmes have since taken on the 70's and the best in soul, but this stands out as their greatest recorded achievement. Brilliant!
Great, but Obscure
Me First and The Gimme Gimmes are a collection of punkers from Lagwagon, NOFX, and Fat Wreck records front men. The transformation of these songs, in particular "Science Fiction" from the Rocky Horror Picture Show to a punk rock format is trully skilled, and well worth a listen.
