unimpressed
I have to say, I am most unimpressed. I heard a great punk cover of 'My favorite things' from 'Sound of Music' and sought it. I was in a tattoo parlour and he just told me 'find it'. So I searched and searched, hassled him again and he still won't tell me. The closest thing on itunes or anywhere else was this. This is not punk. This is some kind of nu-metal-crappy-ultra-compressed-with harmonies-excuse for punk that I hear far too much of thes days, and it really ought to be called pop. This is for kids. It is an insult to punk. The version I heard was very raw, one guitar without the layers, real drums, chugging bass and hurled vocals - with more punch than a speedball, it sounded like it was recorded by a Ramones alter-ego, on a shiny day. I might be a fool (and yes I am) but I'm not falling for this rubbish. I'm happy to admit I haven't heard any of the other songs but I've heard enough. Give this a miss... Please someone tell me who did the proper one?!
gimme some more!
MFATGG are a punk covers supergroup, made up of memebers of no use for a name, lagwagon, nofx and the foo fighters.
This was their second release and saw them embracing their favourite broadway tunes, turning them into short punk masterpieces of humour and classic punk ideology.
Amongst the best on the album are 'over the rainbow', 'science fiction double feature' and 'tomorrow' (from Annie). This is an album that glistens with humour and bubbles with energy, an essential for any fan of punk, comedy covers or any of the bands above. The gimme gimmes have since taken on the 70's and the best in soul, but this stands out as their greatest recorded achievement. Brilliant!
And why not?
Punk rock has, to my ears, sometimes tended towards sounding like musicals. Considering that the members of the Me First & the Gimme Gimmes have come from all various punk bands and usually those which play such songs, I am not surprised at all that this album has appeared. Taking female songs from musicals and turning them into their cheeky punk anthems, this is yet another classic from a wonderful band.
