Amazon.co.uk Review
Following a string of unsatisfactory replacements (including former Jane's Addiction alum Dave Navarro), Californication--the band's seventh album--saw them reunited with both errant guitarist John Frusciante (hauled out of a long and debilitating heroin addiction) and producer Rick Rubin, whose mixture of commerical nous and sonic smarts helped make 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik their breakthrough set. It's a welcome reunion: Frusciante's playing, in particular--tight, yet lyrical--fits these songs like a second skin, lending them a sensual sort of ease that is perfectly in keeping with the reckless hedonism of their lyrics. The songs themselves are much the same mixture of adrenalised swagger and high-tensile funk as ever. And typically, there are two or three fillers here ("Emit Remmus", "Purple Stain") which probably should have been left on the shelf. Ultimately, though, it's their ballads ("Road Trippin'", the moody, desolate "Scar Tissue") which really demonstrate their strengths, both as songwriters and arrangers--and reveal, albeit briefly, the hearts this crew normally take such pains to conceal. --Andrew McGuire

No. Just... no.
Sorry, but this album is an absolute disgrace to the RHCP name. Anyone who tells you that this is their best album is obviously not a fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the firebreathing funk punk band who wrote songs like "Give It Away", "Subway To Venus", "Me And My Friends" or even "Sikamikaniko", and put a real rocket up the arse of Jimi Hendrix's "Fire" and Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground".
They're probably fans of Coldplay. In the sense of they own the lastest album.
This is RHCP without fire or any of the grit and power they exhibited before, and what made "BloodSugarSexMagick" so vital.
As far as I'm now concerned, RHCP finished in the early 90's.
Sad.
The Otherside of Blood Sugar...
This is the first Chili Peppers album I've heard. I wish I could of heard every single one in order so I can naturally see the development, of which will be seen in years to come in my opinion, one of the most pioneering bands to ever grace the rock scene amongst The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, etc. This album, arguably, is the best the Chilis have produced. The return of John Frusciante (Lead Guitarist) after 9 years of excessive drug use since the release of Blood Sugar Sex Magik is noted on this album with a massive smile. Even though Frusciante's come back has had a massive impact on the album, it is however Flea (Bassist) who had the major say in the production - as opposed to their 2002 album By The Way where Frusciante had his way. And because of this, you can hear the contradictions in both the albums. From start to finish with a blend of funk, hard/soft and melodic rock this is one of the best rock albums of all time and should be in everyones best top ten. For me, there are two things two more things to note on this album: Anthony Kiedis' (Lead Singer) voice seems to be much lighter and higher pitched than the previous albums - could be an improvement of acoustics or his singing voice, sounds awesome (arguably better) nonetheless; and of course, the change of Frusciante is noted as he seems to be in peaceful harmony with the beautiful melodies and back vocals he come's up with, but he still bangs out raw funky tunes like in Blood Sugar :)
Around The World 10/10 - Funky verses, beautiful chorus
Parallel Universe 9/10 - Musically great verses, top hard rock tune.
Scar Tissue 10/10 - Classic, soothing
Otherside 10/10 - This song really got me into music on a next level. Great work all round on this song. A Personal Fav. Deep song, musically amazing!
Get On Top 8/10 - Funky Tune, makes you wanna dance/bopp
Californication 9/10 - Classic! Confirms the Chilis ascension from Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Easily 10/10 - I love this song. Lyrically, musically, perfect. Fast moving riff.
Porcelain 7/10 - Realllllly soothing, not really a fav of mine, but OK.
Emit Remmus 8/10 - backwards - Summer Time... London in the summer time, trippy guitaring by Frusciante, cool hook.
I Like Dirt 6/10 - Weakest tune of the album, funky tune. It's not bad.
This Velvet Glove 10/10 - An undercover one, a definite personal favourite. Nothing can be said except that it's such a nice tune. Musically, the verses are beautiful, and the chorus is funk-driven made to sound melodically rock.
Savior 10/10 - Clever song. Can't figure out what the verse is and what the chorus is. This song show's how talented the Chili's are.
Purple Stain 7/10 - Another weak one, still pretty good. Better than I Like Dirt. Funky-Fun Tune.
Right On Time 9/10 - Another Funk-Fun-driven Tune, just brilliant. Verses makes time goes fast, Chorus seems to slow it down.
Road Trippin' 10/10 - Brillant end of the album song. Acoustic guitar and strings are employed, proper chilled out song.
perfect
Their best yet. Along with Mother's Milk and BSSM, this completes the Holy Trinity of RHCP releases. The last album to truly show their diversity before a more mature, mellower sound came to the fore. Strange that the Amazon reviewer considers 'Purple Stain' and 'Emit Remmus' fillers. I think they fit the track listing just fine, unlike 'BTW' and 'Stadium...', where the fillers started to appear.
