The greatest find in the world... ever
I stumbled on this album by chance in the odd-ends bin of a closing bookstore. I can still remember the standing hairs and throat lump when I first heard that powerful lead-voice and the simple chords blasting from my stereo...
Like all great albums, your favourite track will change depending on your mood, the season and your hairstyle but the overall simplicity and grace of the lyrics will stay in your mind when your on that crowded tube or waiting in line in the sandwich shop and all the way home until you are able to hear Leadbelly belting out the hits again.
Even if you don't love the blues, the simple richness of the lyrics in a song like 'TB Blues' will take you straight to a place and time that very few artists could or can. And if you have ever loved, you will feel the pain in the vocals on 'Alberta' and 'Roberta'.
One in a million find.
Excellent
This is an excellent cd. I'd heard good things about Leadbelly and so swooped for it because it was cheap. It covers a whole range of his songs and I have been inspired to buy more. Mothers Blues is absolutely amazing, as is John Hardy, Alberta, TB Blues and Where did you sleep last night (covered by Nirvana on their Unplugged album). Leadbelly earned his nickname from his incredibly powerful voice, which is evident here. What is also clear is that he was a very talented guitarist. Buy this album if you love Blues, particularly old Blues or if you want to know who influenced Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, White Stripes etc.
