'90s gospel phenomenon Adams' major-label debut is about ashigh-gloss as it gets--the great production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis is all over it--and if you weren't payingcareful attention, you might not even notice that it was religiously themed; the opening "Time to Change", for example, with its lyrics about "a woman from down the streetatryin' to get the attention of a married man" sounds more like hip-hop social realism than a paean to the Lord.
It's not long before the listener gets the message, though; by the time "That Name" comes up, a massive production number that goes from a placid piano/strings intro to a mass choir blow-out with Adams' sultry alto soaring serenely above the din, you know there's some serious testifying going on here. The bottom line is that while the album's mix of gospel, hip-hop, andsoul is designed for maximum cross-over appeal, it undeniably works, and has the capacity to strike even the secular asuplifting; in fact, you'd have to be pretty cold not to be moved by "The Things We Do", a hymn of praise complete with samples from JFK's inaugural address and Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

Recognized in the last decade as one of modern gospel's seminal voices, Yolanda Adams is clearly poised to take up the torch from foremothers such as Mavis Staples and Aretha Franklin with her Elektra debut, Mountain High... Valley Low. Adams brings her music to a wider audience not by watering down her message, but by making a record of supreme power, conviction, and glorious beauty, incorporating elements of traditional gospel, hip-hop, jazz, and R&B into daring arrangements. "The Things We Do" is a gorgeous ballad with samples of JFK and MLK speaking some of their most famous words of commitment. And "Yeah," easily one of 1999's best R&B singles, is a masterfully ebullient song of praise and dedication marrying thick, funky beats with divinely soulful vocals. A bright and shining testament to faith in a higher power, Adams uses her extraordinary vocal prowess to uplift her listeners and to elucidate the pure joy of spiritual and musical flight. She not just crosses but banishes lines of separation. --Paige La Grone

Yolanda's the Lady of Gospel- She has done it again
The album is great. I'm pleased to say that my favourite song from the album has got to be 'Fragile Heart,' I listen to it & wow. It makes you want to surrender completely to the King of kings, and it makes you realise that we should take everything to Christ coz He's the only one that can do it for us. Don't forget 'we can do ALL things through CHRIST who strengthens us.' Honestly buy it, it's good. Love y'all. Stay blessed, from Hannah.
Brilliant album & completely recommended
This is a great great album.....gospel in an rnb style. Fav. tracks are 'Time to change', 'Yeah Yeah' (which are both written by Mary Mary who also sing on them), 'He's coming back', 'Continual Praise', 'Fragile Heart' and 'Things we do'- but every one is great!! Yolanda Adams and Mary Mary are two of the best names in gospel around.
Not ashamed to sing her praises!!!
Yolanda's had a few CD's out now, but this one is by far one of her best. Have you heard "Open my heart"? Oh my goodness........people, buy this CD - even if it is for this track alone. There's a well written track by Richard Smallwood, and a collaboration with Kelly Price. Hearing "He's coming back - He'sll arrive" LIVE would be sensational. Keep it up 'landa!!
