CD Description
One of the first classic post-Woodstock albums, MAD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN was recorded at precisely the moment that Cocker and his bandleader Leon Russell found themselves, however briefly, at the epicentre of the rock & roll universe. The big hits here--the juiced-up version of Traffic's "Feelin' Alright", the Memphis soul revamp of the Box Tops "The Letter"--have been ubiquitous for years, and remain as potent as ever.
Some of the less familiar tracks are equally rewarding though, particularly the Cocker/Russell duet on Dylan's "Girl From the North Country" (with the composer in attendance), and the obscure early Ray Charles raver "Sticks and Stones". This one shot ensemble (including veteran British musicians and the cream of then current L.A. sessioneers) was a great band, however unwieldy (twenty-one members!) and we're lucky to have this document of its only tour.
Customer Reviews
Vocal Muscle plus Leon Russell! Cocker's finest hour!
Call me an old-fashioned trouser burp if you like, but good time rock 'n roll doesn't get much better than this! J.C.'s voice has never sounded sharper. The music is live, raw, tight as a scuba suit and Leon Russell's piano style pulls the whole glorious sound together. Stand out tracks are
"Feelin' Alright" , "Delta Lady" and "Space Captain". This concert captures the mood (and then some) of the late 60's, early 70's, it really does!
An astonishing mix of British Blues and America Soul
Gathering together many excellent muscians in only a few days, they cheery-picked many of the classic songs of the late sixties/early seventies - Beatles, Stones, Leon Russel and so on - and then turned them inside out. The wonderful, unique arrangements are perfect for Cockers British blues' voice - never better - and the American Soul which infuses each rhythm - toe tapping compulsary. Listen and enjoy the sheer delight of a band having fun and emotional power of popular music at its peak.
Live Music at its best
Famous contractual obligation story notwithstanding, this shows what musicians can do under pressure. With Leon Russell's excellent orchestration (and some good songs too) the "crew" bang out one of the best live gigs on record - EVER.
Cocker's voice is superb of course and the whole thing is just nicely the wrong side of polished.
Great Stuff
