Customer Reviews
A surprisingly good compilation
Any real fan of Northern Soul might find they have most of the songs on this CD, as there are some fairly obvious selections. But then take a better look at the listing - Tom Jones? Elkie Brooks? Not what you'd expect on a Northern Soul album, but brilliant none the less. For those with an interest in this scene, or those whose record collections aren't as huge as most, this is a really good buy.
Interesting!
Not being an out-and-out soul purist, the idea of blue-eyed soul and even Brit blue-eyed soul doesn't fill me with horror; and I must confess I was keen to hear the David Essex track! Turns out, from my reading of the sleeve notes, that it is more of a "could have been played" on the scene rather than yer actual floorfiller! Best track is probably Danny Williams, a bona-fide black artist, but good blue-eyed try outs by Jon Gunn and the great Frankie (from my home town of Glasgow!) and Johnny. I had read about the Bats single before but was quite disappointed with it - couldn't imagine dancing to it - more standard 60s British beat than soul.
A good starter compilation for Northern Soul fans
I bought this one in 2001, more out of curiosity than anything else. Some of the tracks are brilliant - Flirtations / Nothing but a Heartache, Dave Berry / Picture Me Gone and Billie Davis / Billy Sunshine to name but three. This is how my interest in Northern Soul was sparked, even resulting in a two-hour radio show on a local Dublin station in 2005. Well recommended !
