Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
When he split from his 1980s buddies Stock and Aitken, those who loved pop feared that there would never be another record to come from pop svengali Pete Waterman. Then, out of the blue, came Steps, a five piece who were shockingly group-by-numbers for their bland first single (the aptly titled "5,6,7,8"). Then, with "Last Thing On My Mind", an immense, Abba-like paean to heart-break, the group became whole--an immense camp beast, whose songs kept giving to everyone from Teletubby toddlers to ageing old queens. That the band are singing Waterman's trademark open-sore teen ditties helps ("One For Sorrow"--can you bear the pain?), but what completes the brilliant package is the routines. Each song has an aerobic-like succession of weird hand poses and body-twists that should, if you're being good, be learnt by rote from their videos. But what the hell--come on and do some bad vogueing to this great, bad-but-cool pop. --Charlie Porter

Rubbish1
Rubbish, rubbish, rubbish. Look at the cover, it's as bad as the music anyone who liked this crap needs therapy.

Steptastic!5
Well everyone, this is the album that went an incredible 5x Platinum and launched Steps to the top, so you should seriously consider buying it!

"Steptro" is the first track on "Step one", but it's only a 57 second intro thingy that I usually skip. Then the fun starts with "Last thing on my mind", a true pop fest that is actually a cover; Bananarama took it to no. 71 (eek) in 1992! "5, 6, 7, 8", undoubtedly the cheesiest and funniest Steps song ever, is up next, providing you with the most fun you'll ever have listening to a line dancing track! It's followed by the beautiful "One for sorrow", which features Claire on lead vocals, and the gang's first UK no. 1 "Heartbeat", always a firm favourite with Steps fans everywhere. "This heart will love again" is a heartfelt mid-tempo number with a spine-tingling chorus, then "Experienced" allows H to take the lead for the first time. This is also a mid-tempo track and is probably my least fave song on this alb; the two verses are quite short and there is no middle-eight or third verse, which makes it sound as if this song was rushed. But hey, it's worth listening to just to be able to swoon over Mr Watkins' voice! "Too weak to resist" is also belted out superbly by H, before it's time to hand the microphone back to the girls for the happy pop choon "Better best forgotten". "Back to you" is another cheese extravaganza, but it's so bouncy and catchy that you'll be humming it on your way to school/work/almost any other place for ages! Next the fab five give us some uptempo dance with "Love u more", featuring Claire and Faye on lead vocals, and last up is the typical ballad "Stay with me", giving Faye and Lisa a chance to show off their voices!

First albums are usually quite hard to produce, but Steps have given us a debut to remember here... "Step one" is a classic album with some of the cheesiest and best pop choons you'll ever find! Enjoy.

A total and utter campfest..!4
There really is a bit of everything on this album, Steps, doing what they do best (ie pure, cheesy, uptempo, disco sounds) however, I find, the best tracks are the ones you've already heard in the charts. All the other tunes seem like they are there with the intention of 'filling' the space on the rest of the album. There is always one exception to every rule, and that is the funky 'Roller Girl' cover 'Love u more' which is arguably the best track on this c.d. The weakest songs are probably the 'H' solos -Experienced and 'Too weak to resist', but they're redeemed by the excellent 'One for sorrow' and 'Last thing on my mind' which should leave you bopping around your living room again and again. Learn those dance routines.....!
